OK so your switch side of the harness looks just like mine and yes I have that black wire too. The presence of the black wire further solidifies my assumption that this is a common part that toyota used on many applications. I couldn't reach the TCU / main harness side right now. I'll check my spare harness at my house when I get back there tonight.

wesome, thanks man, that matches to what I have on the engine side. I went back to page 2 of this thread where I posted a pic of the wires right after I cut the plug off. You will see the wires on the engine side vs those on the NSS side. Both pretty much show what I have on the NSS side, White, Orange, Red, Blue, Green, Brown, Yellow & Black (8 wires out of 9 slots).

So here's the next thing I did. I took your pic above and compared it to the B1 connector. Now all I need to do is see this same plug on the NSS side and I can confirm what colors go together. Getting closer!!!

Actually, I think I just figured it out. So it turns out the extra wire on the NSS side is the yellow wire (terminal 3). If you look on my NSS plug side, pin 3"X" is yellow. Since pin 9 is also open that means my missing black wire goes to pin 2 which is Yellow from the Engine side. Makes sense? Please check my work...lol.

Slowly getting closer! I just wire connected each by hand just for trial purposes. The good news is that now I've got gear indicators showing up on my dash. The bad news is that all are working except Drive. So my take-off in D still starts in 3rd. I'm wondering if the #5 Black w Orange to Brown wire is not connected well. I will check again but at least I'm making steps in the right direction now. I don't think pin 3 yellow will do anything if I ground it will it?

Are you planning on bypassing the connector or are you going to put the wires back in the connector and use that?

Also it is very common for the drive both to be burned out

The plug only plugs in one way. If you look at the EWD there is a tab above terminal 2. This makes it impossible to plug it in wrong.

Also don't ground pin 3. If mr t didn't do it I wouldn't

not planning on re-using the plug, mainly because the water-proofing jacket that was originally covering the connection is gone. I've ordered a water proof plug that was previously posted up by others in this thread. Even if the D light was burned out, wouldn't it still shift correctly though? I'm still having issues with the trans starting out in 3rd while in D. That kinda tells me the ECM doesn't know what gear the trans is selected.

Well the trans is controlled by the TCU not ECU, you can troubleshoot it by jumping a couple of the diagnostic ports (can't remember off hand which ones) and reading how many times the OD OFF light blinks.

I'll check your work once I can get my rig on the lift but right off the batt I think you've got 7 reversed with 1 and 8 reversed with 2 on the engine side.

Curious what happened on your trans starting out in 3rd gear? I have had similar problems on my 1993 fj80 chasing down the same ghost.
