WOW what timing. I just started having these symptoms a couple days ago. Intermittent. About 1 out of every 10 times that I take it out of Park.

I will be looking at this this weekend as well...

Went out this morning and peeled back the wiring harness to cut the connector off. Thought I'd post up some pics.
Looks like 7 wires: yellow, green, blue, brown, red, orange & white on one side, the other side not matching color wise so I'll have to find a diagram.

Wait, I just noticed there are actually 8 wires, the connector has 9 slots. The connector 1/2 on the NSS end (towards trans) has black wire also. Here's what I've ruled out by process of elimination. Engine side 1/2 connector on left, trans side 1/2 connector on right.

Green w Blue stripe - White
Orange - Orange
Red - Red
Red w Black stripe - Blue
Red w Blue stripe - Green
Black w Orange stripe - Brown
"Wire color unknown" - Yellow
"Wire color unknown" - Black

I'll confirm this when I find an electrical schematic.

there is one extra terminal/pin in the connector from the NSS that the main harness does not use IIRC... Tuck that one away or just put into new connector from amazon knowing it is not going to do anything....

oh and if you haven't replaced your PHH do it now. leaking PHH is the cause of this connector-terminal/coolant contamination... Also, taking out starter helped out a lot.. Way more room with it out of the way to cut/splice/solder.....

Yep, sho nuff, engine side has 7 wires, trans side 8 wires. I'll have to investigate further.

Just for kicks I thought I'd connect up the wires w duct tape and test the circuit. The trans shifts like it should! I did notice a couple times it seemed to shift into 2nd a little soon so I tested out the ECT & it held it longer in 1st. I ordered the plug so until then I'll keep fixing other stuff. I still don't have the illuminated gear light on the dash telling me what gear I'm in. If anybody has an idea of that fix please chime in. Thanks to all that have helped so far. I'm also still trying to find a correct NSS wiring diagram, I left the black wire off & id like to find out where that goes.

till struggling to figure out the wiring. I've been through all the FSM's posted on the site. For starters, I cannot find the 9-pin plug shown in the back of the Supplement manual listed from Trollhole's downloads. The manual is dated Aug.1992 and my 80 is a '93 but it shows A442 trans. This is the closest thing I can find so far. The wires shown in this schematic are very close, I'm just needing to find where the black wire goes off the trans harness.

Didn't I post a link to the at section of the fsm here?

The 91-92 was full hydraulic control a440 (or a442). The a442f shifts are electronically controlled. Make sure you are using the right manual.

The wiring diagram for the transmission is in the regular EWD part of the FSM not the trans section.

The '92 Trans supplemental manual is really close to what I need. In the very back of that section are pages upon pages of electrical diagrams that show the type of plug used. see example pic below. If I can find this exact manual for the '93/'94, I'm certain i'll be good to go.

I went back through all the links you posted and although they were super helpful getting me to where I am now, I'm still missing the diagram showing the round 9pin plug with wiring color code In/Out.

It's 5 up from the bottom of the first list.

"1994 FZJ80 FSM". That's the one you need. The wiring changed in some cases significantly from the 91-92 models and the 93-94 models.

I know this connector is shown in detail in that fsm because its one that I have and I've seen it before. Let me know if you still are having problems. I can probably upload that section of the EWD to my google drive and share it with you.
