ok. I have a question regarding my dads 85 FJ60.

NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE 60 WITH THE DIESEL. THIS IS A BONE STOCK 60. It has 45,000 miles on it, and lives in a garage. No idea what could have happened.......

The other day, we were out driving on some dirt roads. 90 degrees out, AC was on, fan was on medium/high. And all of a sudden, the fan and AC cut out. AC compressor light goes off, and forced air stops flowing. No matter what we do, we cant get the fan going again, or the AC light to come back on.

Thoughts???

Why not just convert the truck to 24V? Seems way easer, you have from the looks of it all the 24V wiring and the relays/dash ect. Just put 24V bulbs in everything and go.

I really thought about it. And Im still considering it. I just would really like to be able to use my glow screen if I had to. I want to drive through canada and maybe alaska, and I think it'd be nice to have. 12v ones are nearly impossible to come by as far as I understand.

On top of that, I DO have all the dash components. The real issue is that its all right hand drive, and some of it doesnt fit into my LHD system. Also, looking down the road, 24 volt accessories are much more expensive and hard to come by in the states. Aux lights, fridges, etc.

I know it can all be done 12v or 24v and I probably should just go to 24, but at this point, if I can make it work Id prefer to stay with a split system. I dont want to spend another 2 months finding 12v parts.

Loving this thread and enjoying the updates.

Thanks so much! It feels awesome when other people enjoy reading about your work. Thanks so much for taking the time to enjoy!

What I ment is convert the body of your truck yo 24V then there is no issues. The wiring will not matter, its just the few relays, guage and bulbs that need swapping.

No I understand what your saying. It makes perfect sense. But if it takes the my friend the same amount of time to wire it, Ill go with the split system.

I just have to see how it pans out. The wiring is kind of up to the judgment of our shop electrician tech who's helping me. I dont know my a** from my elbow when it comes to wiring, honestly.

OK!!! With the diesel swap in its ultimately final stages, Im already looking well into the future.
I like having a "next big project" to look forward to and to research.

My primary aim for my 60 is to make it as capable and functional as possible, while maintaining its simplistic, classic look and feel. I dont want a whole pile of bells and whistles, nor do I want my truck festooned with gadgets all over the outside that just make me lose milage.

So. Heres what Im thinking about for the next big project.

COIL SWAP.
I love the suspension in my 80, and really wish my 60 was on coil's. My real problem is, I dont really want to change frames to an 80 series chassis. Instead, I want to buy front and rear 80 series axles (FZJ80 rear so I get rear discs) and mod my current chassis to accomodate the coils.

One of the primary reasons why I dont want to do a full frame swap is because I dont want to remove my 12HT, nor do I want to remove the whole body and everything.

Anyone have any ideas about how hard it is to just throw coils under a 60???

Links to build threads would be awesome

I've been told its easier to chop an 80 frame to fit under a 60 body.
Should just 3 link it instead :D

OOOOOOOOoooooooo I could do some 3 link! Any build threads for it? I really wouldnt know where to start.

brokenparts' built a badass 3-linked 60 in his thread. We've been doing a crap load of research for my brothers 80 and it doesn't seem to hard, just need to ensure that everything gets done correctly haha.

Finally got some stuff done!!

Got my new fuel filter installed, and changed the old rubber fuel hoses to diesel specific ones so they don't get dissolved in the diesel.

I also ordered my new priming pump which will be in within a week.

Next up is power steering. I'm picking up some low pressure return line when I get my priming pump. It's gonna take about 6ft of line to run from one side to the other.

My pressure line has been built, and should be in this weekend.
Stay tuned!

I added a table of contents at the first page. I hope it helps

Is that just a generic plastic pre filter?
Im pretty sure it is. I got the part number from a guy at the shop who has it in his diesel. I just picked it up and didnt really check if it was diesel specific.

Any recommendations for a good pre filter?? Iv heard the metal mesh ones work really well.

I am in the same position as you are: 24 or 12 volts?
So what happened to the split you are talking about?
My 12 HT is still in the hj61 and will be going in a fj60 1987 as well.
I am enjoying your infos a lot.

Im going with the split system. My friend is going to do it, and the electrical started this saturday.
I will be able to give more detailed info by the weekend.

Major progress! (FINALLY)

Got the power steering completed!

Got the dash put back in

FINALLY primed the fuel system! I ended up pressurizing it with our compressed air line at the shop. Worked like a charm. Nothing fancy, just a rag and a simple nozzle. I pressurized it until I saw a constant stream of diesel coming from the bleeder nozzle above the filter.

Once all that was done, my friend Eli and I spent a few hours cleaning up all the debris that fell on my truck during the earth quake in Napa. (If you didnt know, there was a 6.0 quake about 6 miles from the shop where my truck is) Tons of parts and components on the shelves came down on my truck. Luckily, she got away with only a few scratches and a few good dents. I didnt take it too hard when I saw what happened to the land rover behind my rig. Two 2F's went THROUGH the hood. Then a cascade of transmissions finished off the drivers side. Nothing that cant be fixed!

Bellow is a view of the alley BEFORE. I dont have any pics of after.

Once all the stuff was cleared, we finally pushed the truck out onto the pavement. It hadnt moved in about 3 months. It felt awesome just to wheel it out, park it on the pavement and give it a wash.
Once out, Eli and I re-aligned the hood, and built some custom bumpers to stop the vibration it gets at speed.

Then we hooked up the vac lines for the brake master cylinder/booster, and added a tension spring to the throttle to give it more resistance and better response. The spring is hooked inside the firewall, and is secured on the throttle lever. (I plan to remove it, blast it, and paint it later. I know its rusty and gross)

LOWE AND BEHOLD!!!! THE WIRING HAS STARTED!!!
Jeff, our shop tech, said he could have the electrical done within 3 weeks. I have my fingers crossed. Next up, I need custom AC lines made.
