Finishing the vinyl dye

We had another weekend of good progress and got pretty much everything dyed and ready to put back in the interior. One of the problems with switching over the interior colors to black and ivory was the seatbelt, so we decided to try out the vinyl and fabric dye. They soaked it up like crazy, but it's still not a deep black like I hoped for. It's not rubbing off though and the belts are still flexible, so it will have to do! We also put one of the mats in to see how it looks on the floor, I would say pretty damn good!!

Wiring and dash

As proud as I am of finishing the interior pieces, the real bulk of the work was done by Mik! He got the dash out of the old body, and transferred wiring to the new body. We also worked on disconnecting everything on the firewall so that we can pull the body off. There's still a few things to move over, but I think we're maybe a day out from being able to take the old body off and start working on the new transmission. New suspension coming in a few weeks, and a major frame fix, then we're going to have some well deserved time off for Thanksgiving!! (maybe)

Old body is gone!

It was another long weekend, but we finally got everything out of the old body and ripped that rusty hulk off of the frame! Unfortunately the frame has more rust than expected, so we're getting a new one this week. But if all goes well we'll have a three day weekend after Thanksgiving to get everything under the car cleaned up and assembled. It would be so amazing if a week from now we could put the new body on the frame, but if we can at least get it all assembled I will still be grateful! I'm counting the days until we're driving this thing, and it's starting to look like it could actually drive someday!!

What A Great Build!!!

Really Appreciate The Attention To Detail, Well Done, And A Top Effort.

Cheers Michael

Whew, lots done!

So we haven't posted in a while but we've mostly been working like crazy to get this thing done! We did take a break for Turkey though, gotta get some rest in there! We've been pushing hard to beat the weather and had to work through 18 degree weather this weekend, which if you're from Washington is like working Antartica! But, despite the frigid weather we still got a ton finished:

* pulled engine and axles from frame
* cleaned and painted frame with POR-15, coated inside with rust converter
* removed old suspension
* installed new suspension
* mounted engine to frame
* mounted brand spanking new 5 speed transmission
* mounted PTO winch

Everything is looking shiny and new, can't wait to get it running! We're hoping to get the rest finished up with the frame before the weekend so we can put the new body on. There's finally light at the end of the build!!

little more progress

We've slowed down a bit with all of the craziness of the holidays, but there are a few updates. Mik got most of the engine and axles cleaned up and painted, so everything below the body is looking fantastic. We finally took the plunge and put in the windshield today, which we've been dreading for weeks. No signs of cracks anywhere and it went in fairly easily! At this point we've got all the glass in, and the doors put back together. The next big step is moving the body, which we're starting tomorrow. Wish us luck!

Looking good!!!

Excellent build and write up, definitely top notch, can't wait to see to the top back on tomorrow :)

Gettin there!

Just a quick update, we've been slowed down by the holidays and some truly awful colds, so we're hoping to get back to it this weekend and get the body on there finally! In the meantime, I started another thread if anyone is interested, we got a job to do a vehicle wrap on an FJ40, which Mik is extremely excited about! We've been wanting to wrap our 40 for a long time, but it seems like when you have a business it's always your own work that gets put aside. So at least we'll get to work on a 40, maybe it will inspire Mik to get his done too! Here's the start, we should be installing next week so I'll post photos of the progress:

Awesome!! And know about the whole business thing, my wife is a hair stylist and I think I am lucky to get my hair cut every 6wks! Of course she wont let anyone else touch it though.

Beautiful work on the wagon - cannot wait to see what you do on the 40 wrap!!

Greg - At least you have hair.... ;)

It was a good day!

Success! We got the body onto the frame way faster than I thought we would, just a few nudges from left to right and it slipped on like a glove!! Now we just have to reconnect everything and get the engine going. On a side note, we heard that the Old Man EMU suspension is usually pretty stiff in the back and needs weight to settle, but it's kind of crazy how much higher it is than we expected! I know it's only a few inches, but it really makes the whole thing look huge! I guess we'll be hauling around some bags of concrete or something for a while to get it settled!

Awesome!!! Installing the body back on the frame is satisfying, isn't it?
