by wrapping the welds is key and what I always try to do.
So pretty

The peanut gallery, who is unlikely to have ever had a metallurgy class, and wants to talk "stress concentration", has spoken. It's all wrong!

I'm sure I've forgotten everything I did back in college on finite element simulations of welded structures, so you're probably right.

Every (factory) hole in that frame represents an area of stress concentration.

If you want to continue, let me know if you're asking about notch stress concentration factor of fillet welds or something else.

Do they have a way to get the powder inside the channel? That's one concern that motivated me to e-coat before powder. I asked my powder guy about a long wand, etc. but he just gave me a rather long reply which translated to "no".

Where's other shock tower??
That's how my '77 frame is configured.

Driver's side bolts on. I think there is a reason for that but can't remember at the moment.

I went and laid hands on mine. It's in the "to be sand blasted and powder coated" pile. The steering box bolts onto the backside. In fact, that's the steering box bracket. It just doubles as a shock tower.

Nope. Just going to spray heavy paraffin or similar inside. Eastman and others make a long wand.

I'm working on a 40 frame off and struggling with whether or not to powder coat or paint

I've seen a lot of instances where powder coated parts chip and water gets in and rusts/lifts off the powder coating eventually.

The flip side with paint is that its easier to get into tough to reach places to get coverage and if there IS a rust situation you see it sooner/before its really begun to metasthesize (sp)

This rig will never see a salted road again but its new england........this week I'm leaning towards paint, undercoat and oil undercoating every year to keep the cancer away.....

FWIW, I just had my 55 frame chemically cleaned and derusted (total immersion process), e-coated (total immersion process), and finally powder coated. The e-coating in itself is a very robust coating which doesn't really need powder except that it's not UV stable and the black will dull over time. I feel really good that it's coated in every crack and crevice.

First I've heard of e-coating but I like the immersion vs powder coating idea

Can I ask what it cost to get it e-coated?

IIRC it was around $750 but that included the frame and a box of smallish parts that bolt to the frame. The chemical cleaning and derusting was 2x that. If you want to read a bit more and/or ask more you might do it in this thread. Chemical cleaning and e coating starts at post 1046.
