Does anyone know what the original color used for the engine was in a 1978 FJ40? If this question was posted earlier, I apoligize I cannot find it. We have the engine pulled and would like to paint it soon. Thanks, JMP

Right after I posted this question, I found a thread that indicates that the factory color was gloss black. Everyone agree?

And that's the same color for a '77 too.

Yes, it is not a factory color, any of it.

Wrong.:p

Water pump, and fan clutch are correct colors as well as the dipstick. The dipstick was the most important part. lol

I'm also pretty sure all the internal parts are the right color.

This is not a pimp your engine pic. It's a shameless attempt at humor.

You are missing your alternator tensioner bolt and what is the large red hose looking thing on the far left of the picture. It comes out below the hot water return line adn looks like it is plugged into something copper.

Yeah I toyed with the idea of just cutting that tensioner hole off. My tensioner bolt I have is slightly bent and wouldn't have looked good. Plus I would have had to tap the tensioner nut to use the standard threads on the alt. Plus it would have been 3 more pieces I'd have to paint.

That is the main power feed coming from the batteries under my seat and going into the distribution block. Probably gonna change that out as the insulator housing is cheap plastic and if it breaks off it's gonna start welding in places I don't need welded. No way that 00 cable is gonna burn through.

Big gay's oil filter and distributor cap are the correct colors also. Every time I see that thing it makes me laugh. I'm actually building a very similar semi-hipo 2F motor right now, but i'm not doing tbi just yet. And my paint job will be a little more conservative.
