Builds 1965 FJ45lv build up/resto thread

Drove up to my buddy's place after work tonight, got a little over 3 hours of work on the lv.

Nothing exciting, more of the same......He had me install the latch assembly on the drivers rear door. He wanted to work on the body line between the door and the rear fenderwell, he thought it needed a little personal attention

I pretty much started on the roof. Spread a paper thin skim coat of filler and sand it off.

I'm sure most of my day tomorrow will be spent on the roof and my buddy wants to work on the drivers side tomorrow to really fine tune it.

I imagine if things go well we will get going on the front cowl, if not tomorow Sunday on that.

One other thing....I kept meaning to post pics this week of my poser shots of my FJ40 up at my hunting cabin last week.

I know a lot of you are saying, "what poser shots, it's just sitting there?" Hey, that's about as dirty as my 40 has every been. We had also had some rain and I had to lock it into 4wd on the way into my cabin

That rarely, if ever happens

Another day, and more sanding

Pics of todays progress. My buddy concentrated on the entire drivers side getting that all tuned up and I spent the entire day on the roof and front cowl getting that squared away.

After we spent most of the day spreading and sanding getting everything where we wanted it we shot a coat of tinted primer. He tints the ureathane primer with a ureathane toner so the primer is a better guide coat when block sanding. When you start sanding you can see the different color of primer once you sand through. You can't tell very well in the pics, but the primer is bluish.

So back up tomorrow, and we both start block sanding again.

One good thing, we are pretty much done with the filler work on the outside. Still have a little more to do on the inside, but the outside is just block and primer work from now on

Is that an LV hood? I thought the LV didn't have the bumpers for the window or the hooks for the window. At least mine doesn't. Is the side vent for the heater/fan? My truck had no heater or fan from the factory.

No, the hood is from an early FJ40. I bought it early this year from POSER, I just haven't got around to removing that stuff yet. I still have to weld all the holes shut and get that taken care off. The hood that came with this truck was all bent up and full of bondo, just like the rest of it was. It was easier to buy a good used hood.

Yes, side vent is for the fan.

Looks incredible. so much better than the truck that left SoCal last year. BTW, on at least two of the three of the FJ45 lv's Ive had, the holes in the hood were welded closed. Not sure if they are that way from the factory, but I thought it was pretty funny.

Nope, not from the factory. I was looking for those on my hood before I found out it wasn't an LV thing.

More of the same today. I started on the roof, my buddy started on the side. I now know it take 2 guys approx. 6 hours to board and block sand an entire lv

Once the entire thing was sanded down, sprayed it with another couple coats of ureathane primer.

Since there were a few hours left in the day I started on the inside. The drivers side in the rear needed some work. About an hour with the stud gun and then skim coated that side and sanded it out. The passenger side is pretty nice, that won't need much work if any. Didn't get any primer on the inside, but it's a start.

I also brought up a color sample that I sprayed for my wife on Thursday. I think I mentioned that she was having some problems picking out a white. I think we have a winner now!!!! The white on the top of the continetal beige is a PPG generic white out of there color book, the wife just picked it after looking and comparing it to all the other samples I sprayed. Anyway, brought it with and took a couple pics.

I could have purchased an LV 7 years ago in Michigan for $1400 bucks and I passed on it for two reasons:

1) It was advertised as only a "60's Landcruiser" and I had no idea how rare it was. ( I had the FJ40 blinders on) I was looking for another FJ40 at the time. I showed up to see it and was disappointed... Not a 4o, not interested.

2) no rust, sure, but it had a plow on it so it must have been beat...

One of many regrets in my life that I'll not soon forget. It's great to see one come back to life.

The "L" refers to Left Hand Drive and the "V" refers to a "van" body.

So, an FJ45V is a wagon and an FJ45LV is a left-hand-drive wagon.

You experience is the opposite of mine! I found my '67 FJ45LV in the local Guatemalan paper and it was advertised as a '68 or '69 LandCruiser camionetta (wagon). I figured I'd be seeing an early FJ55 but when I saw the LV that was all that was needed for me to want to get it! I didn't even know of them before. Mine is an LV as it is left hand drive.

They just drop the "L" if it's a right hand drive. That's because Toyota is made in Japan where right hand drive is the norm. They need to spell it out when it's left hand drive.

Like "cruiserdan" says FJ45V is right hand drive, FJ45LV is left hand drive.
