Thanks Yota! I'm guessing the tubes are not stock. Have not seen them on other 45 beds. Any idea what goes into them?

This lovely contraption. I just thought he made it fit in something that was already there. someone else must have put them on. The welds are way too good for his booger welds. The only other LPB I've seen in person is a flatbed, so I just thought they came with them. You learn something new all the time.
By the way, very impressive build. I look forward to the updates.

cold weekend.
worked on the tailgate. spent a lot of time on the "TOYOTA" panel. welding up holes and fitting the panel to the frame. couple pics.

Same up here made it difficult to get anything done, air tools would run at half speed till warmed up today. I see the same great work being done, that tail gate is looking beautiful...

The air tools here were running at full speed, but the cold weather was making the operator run at half-speed, sometimes even slower.
Just got to the end of this thread and I've been left hangin'. I love FJ45's and this build is sweet. Your craftsmanship on the fab work just tops it off. Can't wait to see more.

More work on the bed.
Spent some more time on the bed. Made the small pieces that weld to the end of the bed side rails. Spend some time making sure they fit fairly flush with the end of the bed sides then then welded these up.
Cut the ends of the tailgate top rail to fit the bed width, then made up some end caps for these and welded them up. Also cut the corners at 45 degrees.
Found the latches I bought a log time ago. Mounted these up to make sure I was locating the latch support and chain mount correctly, then made one weld on the top side. Still trying to fogure out if the stock gate had another weld on these pieces.

Tailgate ends capped and the front part of the top rail cut at approx 45 degrees.

Now had to cut the holes bigger for the bed's "J" hooks to pass through.

Locating the latch support and chain attach bracket. Cleaned up the chains a bit and test fitted. Welded the support in place. Mounted up the latch.

Next step is to locate and weld the inner panel gate supports. But first they need some work. Several cracks and a number of holes to fill...as well as one looks a bit like a boomerang.

Looking good. I am still in the minor fixes of my tailgate, just finishing up the small dents with surface glazing before prime and paint. I was lucky compared to some. I do have to ask were did you find your tailgate handles. Mine could use replacing as the inside slide area of the handle after years of use has tore a longer grove leaving the handle somewhat loose when set to locked down position. You can see a bit of a droop on the right side handle

Remainder of the weekend...

Braces straightened out a bit and then welded to the inside of the gate.
Welding on the braces caused some distortion to the panel and now I'll have to do some more bumping to get it a little closer to flat before sealer goes on.
Also welded the 3 hooks to the gate.
Trying to decide if I want to add marker lights to the bed. I have the lights, just a matter of cutting the holes. I know they were not on this year 45, but I kind of like them vs. not having them, especially for night driving.
Also need to decide where the gas filler will go and then make mods to the bed to accommodate the filler location. Will need to layout the gas tank. I guess this is one of the next things to tackle.

Had intended to paint them but I saw those reflective letters a few weeks ago and was thinking about picking up a set.

Put the bed back on the frame. Mostly because needed to make some more room in the garage. Engine block is at the machine shop and I'm hoping to get it back in 1-2 weeks. More room will make the assembly of the engine, transmission and the remaing drivetrain a little easier.
Second reason for putting the bed on the frame was to get some measurements for a gas tank. The gas tank will go under the bed behind the rear axle.
