Got about 1/2 day last sunday to work on the 45. Made some progress on the exhaust. Have a 2" from each manifold Into a single 3". Next step to mount muffler and build some flanges so I can break It Into several sections and take It In and out If needed.

Hi Mike
Great work as always comes from your direction. Would like to make another visit and look at your rig maybe next month. Additionally I am in the process of getting a 65 LWB 45 it has zero rust and is a runner, updated with 78 donner 2F engine and 4 speed trans. Still going to finish the project currently I am working on, however I fell in love with this one I am getting a fine example of stock and the price was right. Will be picking it up around the 25th of the month be anxious to share it with you upon my return... Skip

Wow. That is a nice clean exhaust!

Dropped the 700r4 pan. Fabbed up a skid plate and welded it on. I like to have a drain plug on the trans pan, so used a 10mm cap head bolt, washer and nut to make one. Drain is on the rear of the pan and up the side a bit so it won't get hit.
Painted and installed the pan with a new gasket.

Installed the tcase front output flange. Drilled out the front diff pinion flange to 10mm to match the driveline. Front driveline is now ready to be completely bolted up. Just need to pick up some 10mm driveline bolts.

Ran into a problem with the brand new e-brake cable. Its not long enough. :frown: Its probably about 10" short. I'll ahve to investigate options for keeping the original e-brake handle in original location.

Have some pics, but can't seem to be able to upload them. will try later.

Upload working...here are a few pics.

Painted and re-installed. Used some leftover engine paint.

My son calls diamond plate, "Toyota plate" because it is just a whole bunch of T's.

Since he said that, I have used it more.... like the look.

Squint a little, you'll see it.

haha, that's funny. Kids come up with the darndest things. Someone already used that one a long time ago.**

Here's one, we were on the trail and a friend had a rear axle break and take out the loc-right locker with it. When we got the rear diff cover off, my friend's kid after seeing all the schrapnel, says "HEY, IT'S DIFFY-POP". We had a good laugh even though it was near dark and we still had a diff to fix and a few hours of trail to go before camp.

** for you youngsters out there, it was Art Linkletter

Worked on the exhaust over the weekend. Made a hanger for the muffler. Put a flange on the end of the first exhaust pipe. Cleaned up the pipe and painted with some Rustolum 2000 degree temp paint. Media blasted one of the headers and painted it with the same. I'm still working on the other header to get it stripped. I don't know what kind of paint Headman put on these, but its still soft and the media takes forever to remove it. I'm stripping it because the last set of painted headers I bought from Headman, the paint burned off at initial startup. Maybe this stuff was supposed to get hard once it got hot from runnign the engine but I didn't knwo for sure and I didn't want to remove them later.

Made some rear axle bump stop mounting brackets. Since the axle has been moved forward and its now spring over, the original bumps were not in the right position or long enough. Made these new ones from some 2 x 3/16 flat bar. The stock FJ40/45 front bump stop bolts to them. Here's a few pics:

Interesting note from the Hedman website:
UNCOATED(Shipped with black coating to prevent corrosion BEFORE installation. This coating does not protect the headers after installation, and will burn-off at operating temperature.)

Would be nice if this "coating" was not so think or was a hard substance like cured paint. Again, it is not very hard and media blasting takes a long time. A wire cup brush on a drill or die grinder gets it hot and it smears instead of fully removing. I guess he easiest removal might have been chemical stripping.

So far, hand sanding with corse grit, like 80, to get the bulk of the coating removed then into the blast cabint for final cleaning seems to work ok but its time consuming.

Yeah, but theres no rust right?

Nice drain plug!

I don't like auto trans pans without a drainplug. And I'm not fond of the kind of add-on plugs that you bolt in place with a plastic washer on the inside and outside of the pan. Figured I would make something I didn't have worry about.
