I run the LE DELO also. It is the only DELO available to my knowledge. I was concerned at first to switch oils, but was assured by Chevron chemists it would be no problem, and it has not been.

A.P. Fischer sells a version of their own branded oil, made by Chevron that is basically the same as the old DELO if you want it. It's also a little cheaper, but no real advantage.

You know times are getting tough, there was a guy in mechanic blues in front of Kragen with a big tool box asking people if they needed a mechanic.

Okay oil geeks, wanted to bring this discussion back up...

Just changed to Dello 15-40. Great deal for 2.5 gallons at Wally World.

Should I be cautioned about the SN rating? Is that a newer rating than the SL,SM? Ratings?

Secondly, I seem to notice on some restarts a small puff of smoke. I don't seem to recall this prior. It's only my second oil change under my ownership. My first change went with 5-30.

Thanks for the knowledge!

The diesel rating for this oil is CK-4, vs the old CJ-4 - which has more of the good stuff that harms catalytic converters.

I believe they also apply the SN rating to this oil because it's ok (officially) to use it in vehicles requiring SN-rated oil (typically gas-powered vehicles). I have been using Delo 15-40 for years in my Land Cruisers and they seem entirely happy with it. If your valve stems seals are weak, you should sell less smoke at startup with 15w-40 than with 5w-30 oils.

Thanks @SteveH I would have assumed I would have had more smoke on startup with the 5w-30 as well. So, just to confirm there is only one version of Dello 15w-40? This is only my second oil change with the beast, I don't have great records from the previous owner, so I am not 100% sure what was in there prior to my ownership.

The old CJ-4 spec will likely be phased out. Don't overthink this - oil is oil, and the most critical aspect is having some in the crankcase and changing it at times. Recall the quality of the SE/SF oil your truck left the factory with.

Glad someone raised this thread. I do believe @orangefj45 mentioned delo to me as a good option when he did some work on my 60.

I've been running Delo 400 in all my cruisers and Dodge Ram Diesel for years .........

If you are a near a CAT equipment dealer, this oil is designed for and meets all needs for flat tappet engines - diesel or gas, and is quite reasonable in price.

Looks like Zinc ppm is 1200(ish)

The Valvoline VR1 is 1,200 as well.

Here is a good read on 40 high zinc oils and test data on there wear protection. Most of the diesel oils are included.
