Just change the oil on my 60 and i happen to have poured diesel oil (15w-40) into my 2F,my question is should i drain it and dump some 20w-50 or just leave the oil in it? need your opinions or comments.:o

I run 15W40 "diesel" oil. What brand/line? Is it approved for spark ignition use? I run Rotella, lots of guys run Delo I believe.
 
Just have a look at the API certification on the jug. It will have a bunch of letters, C? for sure if it's diesel oil, and if there is an S? then it is also certified for gasoline engines (most oil is, even diesel oil).

The Chevron Delo 15w-40 oil I have here has an SL rating (which is a very good gasoline rating) in addition to the diesel rating.

Rotella is premium oil. Most heavy duty trucks run on it, in my experience.
 
Like everyone said, "diesel" oil is fine if "S" i.e. SE rated, in fact, it's better because of the wear additives that are missing from modern formulations. You need it for the flat lifters in the 2F...

I run Rotella T 15w-40 on the advice of my engine builder who happens to do all of MAFs rebuilds.

Rotella T 15 40 ( Wal Mart 11.00 gal.) is sl, sm, and sj as well as several deisel ratings. It is marketed as a hevy duty oil and it has good wear additives. I just changed my oil today in my 87 fj60 and that is what I used along with two Qts. of lucas ( two Qrts because of the high capicity oil system).
 
Just like the others, I have been running Rotella-T in my 2f for always...change it every 4,000 to 4,500 miles & it is still somewhat cleanish when drained..Cheap too, I use Wicks or Bosch filters also...I know that wasn't part of the question, but I thought I'd throw it in anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion guys, this oil comes in 55 gallon drums at work we use it for the 5.9L cummins diesel. i thought it was the 5w-30 oil,i guess i'll just leave it in there for now and i also use wix filter.:D

i was told that Rotella has a high detergent content in it, and might not be best for high RPM motors. I have ran it for years in a commercial lawn mower, and the rings are nearly shot after only 850 hours. compression is way below normal.

could an 2F be considered high RPM at highway speeds? i usually am at or near 3000. the lawn engine i have that has taken it in the chin runs at 3600 rpms.

anything to this story of high detergent and Rotella not liking and possibly being harmful to high rom motors? (my duramax rarely gets above 2500 rpms)
 
It may "scour" some seals and oil leaks might result. That is what happened to me when I put Delo 400 15-40 into a high mileage gasser. The "scrubbing" compounds of the oil made my rig really leak. The lubricating compounds are fine for a gasser.

Bottom line is it's a waste of money on a gasser. Get cheap gasser oil.

P.S. I had "un-restricted" access to 55 gal drums of Delo 400 15-40 and after one experiance with my gasser I never used it on another gasser. I also don't use it in my diesels as the 15-40 is like syrup in the winter. I use Delo synthetic 5-40 in my diesels year round.
 
I use the 15w-40 Delo for my cruiser and my diesel DD.
 
I've been running it for quite some time (Rotella-T) and have no leaks...I would not consider the 2f a high reving engine at all. I know several people who use it in SBC engines with no problems. HMMMMM?
 
Remember, the Delo 400 and the Rotella are designed and marketed as diesel oil. I know very few gasser oils are rated for diesel use and my guess is the gasser oil cannot deal with the high soot content in the diesels (that's why diesel engine oil is nearly always black, even right after changing).

It is probably best to run gasser oil in a gasser but one time probably won't cause any damage, heck if it's "S" rated you probably won't cause damage all the time but it's probably not the best you could do either.
 
Bad Rings?

Bad rings or compression sealing is usually caused by crap getting in the combustion chamber, usually dirt from bad air cleaners. Lawn mower engines usually die because of this, not poor oiling. How does diesel oil give you bad rings?
 
Diesel formulations are superior to gasoline oil formulations in almost every respect - and you usually pay more for it.

I would use it happily, and I know lots of people who use nothing but diesel engine oil in their gasoline engines.

If your seals started leaking after putting in 15W40 diesel grade, it wasn't the oil's fault.

Worn rings? Not because of the 15W40... Lawn mowers are cheaply made, and most non-commercial mowers are built on a 500 hours or less design life. Many newer commercial mowers are quite cheaply made as well, and I don't think a diesel grade oil caused the problems.
