13BT / H55F mileage experience? (1 Viewer)

Would like to know what kind of mileage this combe gets, expecially when compared to a 6 cylinder Toyota TurboDiesel.

That's going to be a hard comparison since there are hardly any similar rigs that have been retrofitted with both. I know of a couple of 60s with 13BTs and have heard of one with a 1HDT. You could compare to 12HTs I guess, lots of them around. I'm guessing a 5% reduction in fuel mileage with each inch over stock the tires go. Make sure you compare apples with apples.

That being said, Charla's BJ42 with 13BT and H55f gets 20-23 miles per US gal (about 11 or 12 l/100KM). She runs 35"SSRs.

Mine's worse, Bruce. I thought initially that I was getting 23 US MPG, but it was a miscalculation.

My BJ74 with 13BT, H55f, 4:11 R&P, and 255/85r/16 is only getting 20 US MPG or about 12L/100 kms.

Hi Mike,

My BJ74 gets about 22 MPG US or about 25 MPG to the Imperial gal. I have the A440F tranny.

The fuel economy when I first bought the vehicle was awful at about 18 MPG Imp. New air filter, injector service, Howes, changing to stock size tires, and a light foot have improved things a lot. I know it could get better, though.

it varies so much a comparrison will be hard.
i can get 18 mpg in a 12HT or a 13BT or i can get 24 mpg in the same truck.
it depends big time on driving style, type of day and terrain...
if you average it all out you will be in the low 20s with either engine...

19.5 mpg (by rough calculation) in a BJ74 at 110 km/h highway speed. 13BT/H55f/29" tires.

my fj40 with a 13bt/h55f 33x10.50" gets approx. 23-25 mpg in winter and fall. Hope it improves in summer months

In my HJ61 with the 12H-T Im getting 32 miles per gallon.... ahhh ummm errrr... make that 23 MPG. Thats around town with a light foot. If I lead foot it at all.... the milage drops fast. It is better on the highway, but I have not worked it out yet. Gonna see what I can get crossing the praries next week... Hoping for 30.

I get aroudnd 20/21 in town and 26/28 on the highway in my 13BTJ60 with H55. Stock tires, no lift, no a/c, biodiesel. I think Stickboy gets about the same if not a little better.

Wow...those are awesome numbers, Browndog! I'm assuming those are US MPG and not Imperial MPG? By the way, where has Stickboy been? Haven't seen him in here for a while.

Yeah, and I'm not exaggerating either. I got 19mpg pulling the boat with some long hills and low gear crawling on dirt roads thrown in.

I haven't heard from Stickboy in a while either. I sent him an email a couple days ago but haven't heard back. I hope all is well.

I don't understand the last part of your post...but I just filled up and my most current one works out to 11.63L/100kms of mixed hwy/cty driving.

FWIW, my BJ74 with the auto trans - best I ever got was about 9L / 100kms. I swear! After reading your posts though maybe I should be a bit more careful with my calcs. I was doing approx 90 km/hr though and it was dead flat highway and crappy winter condtions. Is it possible though the auto trans with its lower revs on highway driving is as efficient as the 5spd or more so? Around "city" driving I can see they would be the power gobblers they are...
Interesting numbers though on your posts above.

Has anyone chopped off the stock muffler and gone with a high flow (Flowmaster?) and larger diam exhaust....From experience with my BJ42 that seemed to give me another few but noticeable HP and no sacrifice of MPG. Just a tought.

I put a turbo outlet from a Supra on Charla's 13BT with a 2.5" exhaust through a cherry bomb to a side dump behind the right rear tire. Its about as free flowing an exhaust as you can get. I also have the fuel turned back a fair amount ( read : no black smoke). It isn't as fast as it was originally but these things might be helping the fuel mileage.
