I should just write "beer break" in the back of the tranny. 🤣

You've officially beat me into the depths of the traniverse. Now that just sounds wrong.

Tcase rebuild, manual conversion.
Did your kit come with new gasket between the 5th gear housing and transmission body? You've taken out the 4 pass thru bolts
so I'm just asking as Georg @ Valley Hybrids recommends making sure you do that front gasket as once the compression is
off it will eventually leak if not replaced and sealed. I use that red stuff he recommended. Just passing info along.

I’m fine with him being more into Tranies than us. As far as I’m concerned he can be dubbed king of Trans. I’m happy to leave them well enough alone.

Yeah I've done that one before. On new transmissions they just put that gasket in dry, that's what he's referring to.

This one appears to be glued on something fierce so I'll see how I feel about it climbing back in.

This h55 was rebuilt at some point before I got the truck. Dude used some intense gasket glue.
Parts bill was more than a new transmission. 🙄

Years ago I paid to have mine rebuilt… 20+ years ago there were more than $1000 of new parts for it and the T-case. At the time I was busy enough with work I just paid for the complete job… I didn’t want to F up with $1000 of parts when I’d never rebuilt one before.

I have the receipt somewhere. 3500 in parts. 500 in labour.

Brand new h55's were less than that back then. They probably didn't even look into it thinking it was a rare RHD Japanese truck. :meh:

Don't know what let go, but it was pretty violent by the sounds of it.

When I lost 5th gear by Haines in 2017, it never occurred to me to rebuild it. A new transmission cost $2400 and
seemed like a no brainer. Not as much as the no brainer that the 5th gear was lost due to a single 12 mm bolt, but
hey I never claimed to be a genius. But I feel safer now.

Well this is annoying.

Robbing the shifter setup off the 40, this piece is clocked differently. As are the levers that clamp on.

So I can put the manual one on the 60, steal the top piece, but I'll be stuck with modifying the one on the 40.

Because I ain't taking the case apart to change this out. I'll also be hoping like hell it doesn't drop in. Because that would suck. A lot.

Oh well. If it was easy, I'd probably do something else to satisfy my innate masochism. 😔

It can fall in.. somewhat. Not all the way it hits some oil splash guard or rib in the case before it gets eaten by the gears. Happened to me on the trail in low range miles form anywhere one time. Had to fish it up with a magnet while trying to get the lever clamp and threw bolt back on, not an easy task! (Note to self put neodymium magnet back in truck tool box)

Yeah they usually do that to me when I'm installing the back half of the case.

naturally I polished up the shaft so it slid in easy when I rebuilt that case, so it definitely didn't want to stay put...skinny blade pushed in held it. Hopefully I guessed right on lever changes. Oh well.

Old crusty ones probably wouldn't drop in. I had to drive the old ones out with a drift.

Fun fact, these need swapping too. Vac shifter version is shorter.

Glad I decided to look into the shifters before bolting it all in. 😔

That's enough for today. I need my wheaties before torquing the big nut to 100 or whatever it is.

Preload fought me a little. That's why that output housing is dirty.

After a couple in and outs playing with shims on the one I cleaned up I noticed that the bearing race was tight going in, but once it was fully in, it had a bit of wiggle. 😬

So I had to start the whole process over again with this one.

So tomorrow I'll do the last put together bs, put some oil in it and then see if I can get the 40 shifting.

That part at least should be kinda fun. It'll have 4 shifters. For absolutely no good reason.

(Other than chicks dig shifters.)

All back together and filled with oil.

Couple minor ****eries to deal with. Shifter boots are different. Could just use the old one with the bigger hole, but the base plates are different too. I bent the shifter a little, but the hole in the plate is bigger too.

So I guess I'll cut the hole bigger and nutsert but for now I'm gonna work on the other truck.

My hard fuel lines are pretty sketchy looking, so while the 60 is up off its feet I think I'll deal with that. I didn't put the rear drive shaft back in yet because it'll be easier to get to without it.

There's 2 hard lines running back to the tank, but I didn't think the 12ht had a fuel return...??

I'll have to look into that.

You should have installed the 4 speed tcase gears while you were balls deep.
