There are a lot of posts about this. I am going to try to make one thread with all needed key information I can think of. I am not much of a writer so I will try to explain the best I can.

Our 100 series Land Cruisers and Lexus Lx470s all have an ignition immobilizer. What this system does is cut off spark and fuel to the engine unless the correct key is used to start the engine.

There are 2 different kinds of keys, a master and a sub (valet) key. To add new key codes into the ecu a master key is required to allow the ecu to enter programming mode.

If all keys are lost the ecu will need to be reset.

The best way to tell if your key is a master is to watch the security light while you insert the key into the ignition switch. If the light goes out as soon as the key is inserted you have a master, if it stays lit for a second or two your key is a sub.

I think it is ok to advertise my services here. If not someone please let me know.

Here is my little ad for flashing services:

I am going to add info as I get time. This may take a little while

Starting with 1998-2002 trucks. These are the most difficult.

If all keys are lost your ecu will either need to be "virginized", or keys will need to be written to it. This requires removal and disassembly of the ecu. Once the ecu is apart IC900 needs to be removed to be reprogrammed.

To add new keys a master is required. Keys can be added using the pedal dance or with Techstream.

To add the remote door lock function the fob must be programmed separate from the ecu.

Lx470 and Land Cruisers both use a 4C transponder chip for these years.

For vehicles from late 2002-2007 the ecu is programmed onboard using Techstream. This requires a passcode.

These years use a 4D transponder chip.

One more to keep things together at the top

Thanks!

I will mention my case once more, even though every time I have done so in the past, everyone thinks I’m crazy.

Took my 98 to the dealer, and they erased my old keys. Then they couldn’t reprogram the new keys because on the 98, you cannot. So, after a 2 week battle with the dealer, I got a new ECU and my new keys for free. They called Toyota and were told that the 98 was the only year with this issue and they fixed it starting in 99. It sounds like your second statement above might be the trick that they didn’t know?

I just wanted to state my case here, as it might be helpful to others with a 98.

Thanks for this info, good job on all the details.

Mine is a 98. Someone didnt know what they were talking about. I have actually virginized more 98s than any other. Every ecu from 98-2002 has the same immobilizer.

Is there any ways to disable the immobilizer by techstream or a high end scanner? Or physically remove it?

Thinking about it more. There is no way to delete keys without a master key on a 98. I think they might have screwed something up on yours and told you a story.

Not that I have found. No way I would do it around here (Albuquerque area).

Why do you say 98-02s are the most difficult? My 98 was easy, and cheap - less than $10 for the key, $15 to cut at the hardware store, and 5-10 minutes to program, without Techstream.

My LC came with just a metal key and no FOB... it's a 2000... what do I need to do to get a FOB? Does a locksmith have to program it or can I DIY?

They are the most difficult of you don't have a master key to start.

Programming the fobs is fairly easy. This is the best video I have found explaining how.

If you recall when you graciously helped me, I think I required a 4d-68 chip... You sent one from your gx

Yes. I have learned a little since then. It seems like 4D-68 is kinda generic for both chips.

Ah ok. So it's the tp29/30 distinction that matters?

Yeah, for the master keys. The valet keys are also different. I am not sure what the tp number is on those.

Right on, thanks for the video... so I just need to buy a key online and have a locksmith cut it or do I need additional software to program the key?
