considering purchase of a 100 series

I've got an 80 now that I'll keep, it has 200+k miles on it and runs like a champ after baseline and general maintenance.

What's the life expectancy on a late model 109 series? Easy 200 or 300K?

Biggest items that go bad?

What to look for when purchasing?

There's a 100 in my area with 402K for $3800.

To my knowledge the 2UZ is an outstanding engine and achieving 500K+ shouldn't be an issue with a LC savvy person adehearing to normal maintenance.

Get one. You won't regret it.

I'm seriously considering it. Nice to hear the 300+k mentions for sure.

My $0.02: My Hundy feels like it'll go half a million miles. Yes, they're that good.

I'm at 313k right now and all I do is keep the oil changed and drive her nice and easy, I do need to get my tbelt done I just cant afford it on a college budget

The 100s definitely leak less oil than the 80s do. I have 296k and it still feels really strong.

I almost pulled the trigger on a 2000 that had 508k miles on it. The owner had performed a transmission flush with chemicals and killed the transmission.

He stated that prior to that it drove just like it did when he bought it with 100k miles.

The only thing that stopped me was we couldn't agree on a price for a 100 that needed a new transmission.

My 2000LX now has 215k miles on it after the trip to Hundreds in the Hills. I had zero issues due to the mileage, age or altitude. I probably gave the thing a harder workout driving to/from HIH than it's ever had in its life. I wouldn't hesitate to jump in it and make that same trip again as it sits now, duct tape holding the AHC sensor linkage together and all.

Do it.

100 will last as long as you want it to. The key is following the maintenance schedule. As @ponyti said keep lubed & cool, but even then it is hard to kill these tanks.

for peace of mind... at least pull the belt cover and inspect the belt... it "might" look ok I had one with 172k on the belt and the belt still "looked" good no cracks ect... I believe they are good for over 150k it's rare that you hear of a failure before that... the full "kit" can be had off ebay for less than $200 add $70 for the fan bracket and $30 for misc... and 10hrs of your labor (5hr if you have help from someone who has done it before) and you are good to go. I would be more worried about the water pump than I would the TB... keep an eye on your coolant... that is about the only thing that will kill these engines...(loss of)

They will go as far as you are willing to keep replacing wear and tear items. Everything wears out. Life expectancy is not somehow I'm concerned with. Daily reliability is numero uno.

^ interesting. Read at bobtheoilguy do not to use additives in engine oil as most will dilute anti foaming agent. This produces air bubbles in oil reducing effectiveness. I wonder if same could be said of transmission. Regardless I rarely use any additive, save BG products, and then only once in a blue moon. Except 44K in gas tank, which I'd use more often if it weren't so darn pricy.

I do flush 12qt transmission every 15K in my 01.
