@Spook50 OK went shopping and could not find a pot quite like the one I used. Think it must be a "period correct" unit. There is nothing printed on it but the value.

I think this one will work just as well. It's the same size,
just enclosed, and goes to 500k which should be plenty.

@brices123 eBay flasher looks like it could be modded also, if it doesn't work as is.

I'm actually wondering if, since you said you set it to 240KΩ, a simple 240KΩ resistor would work also. It would greatly simplify finding the right part for others looking to do the mod, as long as all other values are consistent throughout other flashers of this part number.

I agree, that's why I mentioned it. It was not very sensitive to change, probably why just cutting it out works too. I didn't try it that way but I imagine it would be pretty slow...?

It's a small thing but really enjoying having perfect led flashers!

The eBay flasher I bought does not work when modded. I tried four different mods:
1. Remove R1
2. Replace R1 and remove R2
3. Replace R2 and solder in a wire for R1
4. Solder in wires for both R1 and R2

The first two had obvious results, not power. The second two kept the flashers at the fast rate.

Not sure what else to try with my eBay flasher.

Myth is busted (at least for the eBay flasher).

Thanks for trying and posting results.

Bought the green Denso flasher (85965-20021). Can confirm this mod works and does indeed take 10 minutes.

I just tried the mod on the pre-88 denso flasher (p/n 81980-22070) and it didnt work for me. Has anybody else experience this? Im just thinking i got a bad flasher. Thanks

Glad I found this thread. I've been toying with the idea of going all LED external lighting for a while but the blinker issue kept me from doing it.

Do you have a manufacturer or part number for the pot you used?
Hi Spook, did you use Randy's method as described or your own. i just ordered All LED lights, including the Front & Rear Turn Signal LED bulbs, but won't install the turn signal bulbs until i figure out the Flasher issue. Thanks.

I may still have it, I would have to check. pm me.

FYI in case you order an LED flasher from superbrightled, it will require modification as others have described on this thread.

I asked superbrightled a support question regarding the Turn Signal Flasher for LED bulb upgrade.

“I ordered the turn signal LED bulbs (front & back) which appears to require the replacement of the original Flasher to avoid hyper flashing. In your bulb finder application, it showed no direct replacement for the turn flasher but offered the CF13GL-02 LED Bulb Electronic Flasher for a "Hazard" light? Just need to know which flasher will work on my 1989 Land Cruiser. Thank you”.

Their reply:

“Good afternoon Andy, your original flasher is a 3 pin unit. However the pins on your unit are a little more closer together. unfortunately we wouldn't have a unit with a pin spacing that narrow I do apologize.

Thank you,
Irv H

I haven't yet. I'll be ordering LED panels for my tail lights and LED bulbs for the front turn signals when I do. Got several things to catch up on on my 62 before I start more projects though.

Bump to add flasher 81980-16010 to the mod list.

Pull the flasher out of the truck and pry it apart. The lower half comes off with two clips on the outside, and two clips holding in the two parallel pins inside the connector. The upper half has one wide tab on one side, then two narrower tabs on the opposing side. I used a hooked pick and a depinning tool (thinned down flathead screwdriver) to take it apart.

Once apart it looks like this:

Stick some cardboard between the coil and the outer structure like such.

Finally, and the whole mod, is to file down that notched bar. Not sure exactly how it works, but I assume this is the "resistor" that regulates the flash interval. File/sand/dremel this bar thinner and your flasher will slow down as much as you want. This is as far as I went:

ZRw84aWSdasw4VeBtbEfHCBo3MODXFE5c0NLXB8ie8V10YrHgLpVj9q9mJinnqlgbU3oy7rGvdJRm2Wt_lVqnDwhTd7MUOF7rmxgQryzqP-3hVnba-quXHAbCrnmICWzIcfgyMXOCRhZJ_EOhzWRW2F53RVFReXDePtYgCWWikcGh8HDf3t_F-eoHnT7XeUwdPSim_vk8EohMHAWDxjO55GhsOJMlI51wMgNVXQBEkhhUPfFf_YY9dRYiS1R1qlFpCH2YzCVtLLzMweFsF2CaloRxhCh9LsP7t_HQkW358T8xSdKanxDkTQnTwcTIMitN1ogzkOXCGqnZvUK4GNN1eaZSb-f287OXzYyWPXocbX1je3Lc66RPf3qV5gw1Z0SC3bw-F_2WSp8AcKrwMc6GnNzO48nstyUzRLqfRxa4JRcP5Hw0pZmV0VtG-f-rnf3YfMzhs3wnrZC_NeOi0KxdjqOUQxP46KzjperiFtIu0dLBPjkwpPgYaClSCyUVjz2OGx4zXwXm6vP8805bUqVC8TYyffLg8W1Q6ywVdQZ7_Mc469MVNp6WCa_BOoVAAOcxfrNW0xAmMwKZQpOkhyw3aLZep7PkhimFbF_afcXIbBLMSSKH2hAVRXGkoIK31fnWarW_wxqHlGfH8cXwT5J7J-bUt7SMPzO66-AzLPU91UfHnVD3DP8YTjPeY2bMZo9ryeCf6qFLsjYCchmbnyjkQ1j=w2238-h1679-no

At this point, I stuck the flasher back in the socket as pictured (no case) to test the flasher speed. I decided it was still too fast, so I filed it down some more:

Now that I was happy with the speed, I put the flasher back in its case, and back in the relay board behind the driver's kick panel.

Voila. LED flasher mod for the 81980-16010 flasher in late 60 series (likely others as well) for free and 30 minutes of time.

Bought the green flasher from 2 sellers on amazon. On opening saw this

Aparently original is a Chinese brand name or something. That's what I get for being lazy.

One seems identical to the one just tested that failed.

The other has only 2 components.

I'll probably give the other a shot.
