OK...you all remember assiting me with the LX450 at 4, 5, 5.5" lift and I was never able to get the thing smooth. So now, I took it down....all the way down. I now have:

*850 and 863 with OME C/C bushings and stabilizer
*No trim packs
*L-shocks
*NEW front and rear drive shafts (both balanced and installed properly)
*I've re-adjusted the upper rear arms to stock length...15 3/4". I'm actually 1/8" shorter than that which should be OK because there's some lift.

The truck is finally smooth when the gas is ON. I tried all the way to past 80MPH. I was stoked...BUT:

The truck STILL GRRRS from the rear shaft when the gas is OFF. It grrs even at lower speeds when off the gas. Maintain speed and it go away instantly.

Now what do I do? I got a standard friggin' OME kit on the thing!

I dunno, but maybe you shoulda just bought double cardan drive shafts? Have you driven it with one drive shaft at a time removed?

I have the same thing with my 80 running 861/862 springs and Bilsteins. Tires have a made a bit of a difference but above 80mph when I let off the gas, I still get a bit of a driveline vibration. If I had to guess, I would bet it is wear in the ring and pinion that shows up when the load is transferred to the other side (i.e. coasting, decel).

Yup. Rear shaft is the culprit.

I'll not spend another dime on the pig. I got $19K+ in it now....I'll sell it and grab another 100 if I have too.

How do you know it's the rear shaft causing the grrr? You said you re-adjusted the rears to with 1/8" short maybe thats enough for off-throttle grrr? Cause now you are inducing two different angles? wouldn't think with that little of amount tho, just usually no ones runs different rear uppers for the OME kits.

 ;p I guess you shoulda bought an LC instead of the :princess: ;) :flipoff2:

maybe t-case output bearing wear? That would kinda be funny in a sorta sick sadistic way...all this work to chase down a t-case bearing ;p

at this point John, you might want to check your output bearing from the tcase (which growls and grrrsss when they are worn).

You might also want to check your diff. end as well...the pinion bearing might also be worn leading to the growls and vibrations.

Beyond the drive shafts, these are the next things to investigate.

Good luck.

EDIT: well, Ben beat me to it!!

Quick on the draw today Ben!

3 folks looked at that long ago. All OK.

I can't imagine the new rear shaft's thickness (.200) is to blame?

If I remember correctly, the vibes go away when either drive shaft is removed?

Nope. Until I took out the J's the front alone vibed on or off gas. Now...it's smooth. It's when the rear shaft goes on the grr hits.

T-case is OK
R&P and diffs are new

R&P sets have been know to make noise.....More so when they are new. You sure they are set up right? When letting off the gas the pattern shifts to the coasting tooth.

Also, when being on the GAS the rear pinion is pointed up more and when its not it is pointed down more. Maybe adjust the arms so the pinion is point up more.

Don't know....the truck will be at the install place today....4 Wheel Parts. I'll ask them.

Yes....we thought of that. I'm just puzzled it's not smooth at the stock length.

You are still running a heavy load lift on a truck with no weight. Put 300 lbs in the back and see if it changes. Could also be the front since you run 850's with no weight on the front.

It's just like my '93 though? 850 863

Plus...the '93 has 15mm front and 20mm rear packs...and the '93 NOW sits lower than the new LX does WITHOUT trim packs....I'm guessing because of spring sag on the '93?

FWIW, my 96 LX has 850/863, with no accessories other than a rubbermaid box full of ~60-80lbs of crap, no vibes, also no caster correction installed yet.

Did you ever have the splines of the driveshaft cleaned and re-greased? Was the rear balanced?
