Hello,

My name is JM, just wanted to introduce myself to the forum, just acquired this 1974 FJ55 from my brother (who had too many toys to take care of). I work and live out of Los Angeles, CA and have loved to tinker and work on cars all of my life, but this is my first opportunity to finally own my very own iron pig!

Story time:

The FJ55 was a truck we grew up with in Puerto Rico, my dad had a '73 (?maybe?) and I remember he'd use it to take us to school in the mornings or for adventures on the weekends. I loved that truck and it was always something I wanted to have growing up, I even think I made my dad promise me he would let me have it when I was old enough to drive. Well like a lot of things in life, things didn't go as planned and my dad had to let her go, she was pretty rusted out and in bad shape anyways.

My brother acquired this one sometime in the 2000's and did all the work on it himself. It's actually in pretty decent shape compared to others I've seen, but it definitely needs some work. There is some rust around the roofline that I need to start taking care of, and will need to get it painted professionally (any tips and tricks or guides to this sort of thing are highly appreciated). This FJ is originally from California, but my brother took her to Florida in 2019 where he eventually became a victim of hurricane Ian. It damaged a ton of his property and he was forced to move out, and since then he has found it pretty hard to get back on track. He had been debating selling off some of his cars and the FJ was on that list, so I stepped up and begged him to let me take it off his hands. Fast forward to today and the FJ is back in California and I am ready for an adventure!

Happy to have found an active group that loves these vehicles just as much as I do.

Thanks for reading and here are some pics:

Heck, I'd just paint the middle section the required white and drive on. Still have its' Toyota drivetrain? Great score!

Keeping rust at bay is good thing. Cosmetics on an actual working 4WD, would be after stuff like a pto winch, some type of lockers, maybe a Orion transfer case and 4 or 5 speed tranny but that's just me. It looks really nice, make it yours and enjoy gasoline while you can.

Appreciate it, thanks :).

Stop calling it an FJ
There are some folks that absolutely detest referring to our rigs as a "FJ". I believe it has to do with Toyota's "FJ Cruiser" to which there should be no comparison nor confusion. But I think you will be good simply referring to your rig as a "pig." Nice truck. You should have loads of fun.

I guess I'll have to change my username too :(.

Did I post in the wrong forum? Darn.
Either forum is okay. All the way near the bottom of the forum is the Iron Pig Preservation Society. That’s the 55 specific forum.

Wow, that’s weird. “FJ” is literally in the model number FJ55. Weird that “some folks” can’t handle the derivative. Those “folks” should be happy enough that @effjay55 has the intelligence to have not once referred to it in the truer offense term - “car”.

Welcome to Mud, EffJay55.
Bring your pics and story to the basement when you have time.🍻

Understood, I don't think I would ever just say FJ and expect people to assume FJ55, so that makes sense. I'll just call it ye ole rust bucket 55 maybe.

The natural habitat for the 55, aka the pig, is mostly relegated to the dry west. Most of the East coast specimens died a cruel and rusty death. Totally cool and underrated chapter in the evolutionary footprint of the TLC. Have any interior pics?
