Just a FYI adjusting the pressure regulator without doing the accumulator springs will definitely increase the harshness of the shift. If you're going to drop the pan, replace all the fluid, etc I would just spend the $99 and get the kit....

I hear ya...

Two questions:

Is this available for the 1992 A440f?

Would you recommend adding such a kit to a trans that shifts perfectly & has 240k on the clock?

Tools is commenting on the hardness of the shift from L to 2nd when you are in low range. I didn't think with the kit it was that bad, but even when it was stock, when I was offroad, 8 out of 10 times when I was in low, I would use the 2nd gear start anyways. But when you need it, you just drop the transmission in L and it holds L, so the hard shift doesn't happen. I have found it to be a non issue. If you need the wheel speed you can start in 2nd or even shift into H. When you need the slow control you will want to be in L anyways. There might be a circumstance when it is noticeable but I am not sure what it would be?

Agree, use 2nd start, the shifter the same way. There are times where shifting 2nd is wanted/needed, long climbs, need the rig/wheel speed, etc. If it's tuned tight it is easy to spin the tires at 2nd shift, and likely at a time when it's not welcome, low traction, off camber, etc. I'm sure it's mostly personal preference, I'm a finesse wheeler, prefer to never spin tires unless I want to. Was able to tune it where I like with the cable.

Tuning the accumulators is optional. The springs can be shimmed or replaced, spacers installed to limit or eliminate their travel. They adjust the time that the shift takes to complete. Softer/longer travel = smoother shift, shorter/stiffer = harsher shift, no travel = instant shift, like dumping the clutch on a standard. I didn't and still don't feel the need for my use.

Raising the system pressure has a significant effect. Like I said, enough for my needs. A turbo rig significantly differs, likely wouldn't be enough, mine is N/A. The effect is a noticeably more "solid" trans, not just in shifts, but also in in acceleration and compression braking, significantly noticeable when playing in the rocks.

I work on, drive several '80's, a few with the pressure mod, most without. So, it's not like I forgot how stock rigs drive, it's very noticeable.

The cooler is a bypass type. Upping the pressure will drive more fluid to the valve, causing more flow through the coolers. Likely works the same in both setups.

Not campaigning for ether, they have their place. But upping the pressure is dead simple, takes some ATF and RTV, makes a significant difference, likely all that most need or would want.:meh:

Will this mod affect mpg; up, down, no change?

so just to update this, just got done with the supercharger install and transgo kit and am very happy with the results. IMO the transgo kit is really a nice addition to the supercharger. Much faster quicker shifts. One thing that is weird is that with the power button engaged it actually seems like it does not shift as well. Most likely will just use the power button when I tow.

time to revive this thread seeing how the turbo is out. what transmission does a 96 have. summit lists 3 different transmissions but I'm not sure which one to get... A340, 341 or 343

The A343F is what the 96 has. That kit actually works for all three transmissions.

***edited, when I say all three transmissions I mean the A340, the A341 and A343. So Supra, 4Runner and late model Land Cruiser, not ALL 3 Land Cruiser transmissions A440, A442, and A343. This only works on the A343!***

and here are the OEM components you'll need to complete the process along with the TransGo kit:
Should have been part of the turbo kit :worms::flipoff2:

More seriously is the difference between the shift and reprogram kits that serious? I have a rather low mile trans that shifts firm already (or so i think) but was wondering how big the difference of shift was between the two kits. the base is just springs versus the drill out holes in the reprogram kit correct?

I just built my motor by myself and consider myself a fairly capable mechanic but some of the threads with open ended questions make me wonder how easy the instructions are to follow on this and the last thing i need is a buggered trans with this now being my DD.

If it is your DD, and it is a low mileage <100,000 mile transmission, just try the turbo kit without the shift kit. If you don't feel like it flares bad during shifts you don't need it now, but you might in 50,000 miles.

94k now! Though i think it's overfilled which i need to address. I'm leaning towards that route but i do like the idea of the shift kit.

The shift kit does make it feel like you are getting more of your new found power to the ground, it was a big difference in my setup. But I had a 135-140,000 mile transmission and more boost than this kit.
