Well finally got rolling again on the 55. Had to cut off the leafs to clear the steering on the 80 axle. I wanted to go coilover and 3 link. I have a good start, but I think I have 1 detail I need to look at again. I was told that the Panhard needs to follow the drag link. Once I had everything in place, it looks like the Panhard has too much angle. Should I lower the bracket on the frame to flatten out the Panhard at ride height?

Take a look at the pictures, sorry I don't have any more I forgot my camera, so I needed to have someone take the pictures for me.

From the couple of pictures you've got it appears you have a couple of options:

1) move the panhard forward. You'll most certainly want to plug that into the 3-link calculator to make sure this ends up with numbers that are ok with you

2) move the steering box or put on a different steering box that puts your drag link further back. Again you'll know better than anyone if there is room for that, also you have to worry about your steering shaft, what components that will interfere with, yadda yadda.

3) on a second look, what would be keeping you from moving your panhard up to the top of the housing, just about where your bumpstop meets? Keep it parallel to the housing and obviously moving the panhard mount back on the frame? Check this one that ORS did on a mini housing:

It might not hurt to throw that thing up on the fork lift and cycle the steering while it is flexed out and observe how it all moves together, while steering and while the suspention is cycling. You most certainly want to do that before you finalize things, as it seems you are doing this one as a keeper!

BTW those are some pimp ass bump stops! Would you PM me how much the set you back?

Talos,

The shocks are Fox 2.5"x 14" with reservoir. The shock rate is way to high right now, but I am hoping as I bolt on the heavy bumper, winch, ect. That it will get me closer, to the right rate. I will try to remember my camera the next time I work on it.

Packaging

Talos,

It doesn't look like it in the photo, but the packaging with the FJ80 axles made it necessary to use coilovers. I thought about using 80 springs, but since the FJ80 diff is so offset it is hard to fit the large 6+" coils. I think with a 55 axle or a full width axle it wouldn't be a problem. The other bonus with the coilover is that I get to choose my spring rates, if you use a spring from an FJ80 you get what you get.

Ryan.

...just checked the fox site, and man them shocks don´t come for free :P

why go coilover and not just springs?
want to change the front suspension on my pig you see :)

Yup, I've got an FJ80 axle sitting in my garage and the options are sadly very limiting with that axle. It seems it is really only destined for linked setups unless you want to go full hydro or (ooga booga) do a Z-link for steering.

I can certainly understand mounting the panhard is very difficult to run parallel to the draglink with the amount of room you have to work with. I tried to mount mine the *best way I could without it hitting the axle housing. Luckily, nothing but my sway bar barely touches my Y-LINK bars. I may try a 3 link on my 55 - haven't got to the suspension yet on my build. This is on my 40:

Finally got some time to work on the Pig

Well I was finally able to get back down to Ironpig and work on the 55. We managed to get the driver's side of the 3 link done and now it is sitting on its own springs.

The Panhard will be fixed it is too steep.

Driver's side, still need to flex it out and mount the air bump stop.

Lookin saweeeeet dude! Tell Lance you want a replica of his Iron Pig 3rd member, he'll know what I'm talkin about. It used to be mounted on the front of his roof rack.

BTW, what are the specs on your coilovers? You running an LC motor too?

LC_Hamma,

I know the Iron Pig 3rd member well. It is more like a wild boar then an Iron Pig ;-)

The coilovers are 2.5"x14" Fox coilovers with a triple coil kit. 3" tender, 14"-175 lb/in secondary, and a 14"-450 lb/in primary.

The 55 has a supercharged 4.7L V8, an LX470 Transmission, and an FJ80 fulltime transfer case.

Droooooool......................

So cool that Lance has catered to the 55 market, such a kool looking rig with many possibilities as you are showing us.

Thanks

Radd Cruisers,

I have to thank Lance, for letting me give this project a shot. He has allowed me almost full control of the project, as well as use of his shop. I think that this project isn't what he had in mind when I brought it to him. We still have a long way to go, but it is great to finally have it sitting back on its own again. I hope that this will be a fairly unique 55 when it is done, but after fighting several issues I have learned a lot about how I would do things differently, if I ever had to do it over again. All in all I am pretty excited and hopefully will have a 55 to drive soon.

You'll most likely not want to hear this, but it might have been easier to have room for stuff if you had just stuck with the stock steering arms. Left the tie-rod out back, curve your main links around it, make the TR and links super beef to deal with rock rash.

Then you would have had plenty of room for your panhard up front.

At any rate, it looks f-ing sick dood! would it be too late to ditch the panhard and just put a 4th link on there? It might give you the room you are needing. I'm super stoaked to watch your build and I think it is really cool you are sharing it with us!

Don't get discouraged, you are breaking a lot of new ground here and your pig is going to be bad ass when you're done!
