Jeffrey,

I was really hoping to make GSMTR this year, but it just didn't happen. If by Pig Run you mean the Cullowhee, NC Pumpkin Pig Run. I will be there even if I have to push the pig around the trail ;-) Is there another pig run that I don't know about? I really hope the 55 can be done soon, it has been a long time since I have been behind the wheel.

Ryan.

Well, for five years or so, the "east coast" pig run has been held at rausch creek in eastern PA... last year we had over a dozen 55's and over 20 rigs... and it was covered in toyota trails... it is the 1st weekend in august this year.. hope your fine swine can make it! It is a "sounder of swine" : )

Looking real good man! hope we get to see it here in October; and w/ any luck on a deisel, i may get to join you guys in PA.

J

Yes!

Just fired for the 1st time today. The motor ran great and sounds awesome. We didn't run it too long since the tranny was low on fluid and we are waiting on some parts, but overall I was very happy. Hopefully Tuesday I will have a short video clip of the motor running. I am in love with the sound (Supercharger, Headers, and 3" exhaust).... Tuesday can't come soon enough.

Ryan.

Very sweet, bet you were one proud papa.

Jack.

1 step forward 2 steps back. Well we were hoping to get the 55 fired up and drive it around today. The Tundra airbox and MAF sensor showed up, but there is no way to fit it under the hood. We rigged up the MAF to get it started. We had a good idle, but the motor was pinging a little. We filled the radiator with fluid and found a split oil cooler hose. So no driving today.

It is back to the drawing board for an Air Intake and MAF sensor.

Damn.

Ryan.

Hey dood, I know this isn't exactly an apples to apples comparison, but when the 5vz went into my 88 4runner, using an injen intake was the easiest solution. No, I'm not super stoked about it, but it works and it had a provision for a MAF in it. You could at least look into getting one for a tundra and butchering it to suit your needs.

First test drive of the 55 today!!! Everything worked great. The brakes were strong, steering worked well, 3 link had good street manners, only a couple of issues:

Headers glow red if fast idle ~2000-2500rpms
Puffs a little black smoke if you stomp on it.

These seem to contradict each other?

Here is a quick video clip, sorry there is no sound, we didn't know the microphone was messed up on the camera until after we had shot the videos.... but it sounds pretty awesome.

Thanks for everyones help!!

I really hope to make the Pumpkin Pig run. I am taking a week off to go drive around the Outer Banks the second week in October so I will see if I can make it to NC the 26th-28th. I am not sure if it will be "finished" lots of interior work to get done, but at least I can drive it around!

last time my exhaust manifold stared glowing red was when the spark plug wires were not put on the correct spot. could be timing as well.

Dood, that blower sounds SICK! Here is what I would advise, after dealing with a supercharged 5vz-fe in an 88 4runner:

Guages. Seriously.

I got an XD-1 AFR wideband gauge from URD and it has been very helpful.

I have a dual EGT guage from westach. It is a little on the analog side, but hell, the green backlighting and the analog feel go well with the old 4skinner. Depending on your level of analness, you could get away with just one EGT guage, but judging by your build, having a pyrometer on one of the inner pistons on each bank is good peace of mind when boosting.

I don't know what you've got for oil pressure, water temp and fuel pressure, but as listed, in my opinion of being boosted, they are in order of importance, with fuel pressure coming in a distant 3rd. Usually your AFR guage will tell you if you're running lean. I went with a dual oil press/water temp guage from westach, to keep the retro theme going, and they really are good folks.

Its a pain in the ass to hook up all of those guages, but the peace of mind after putting so much time and money into a project is very much worth it. It was to me at least.

You may want to get with Gadget from URD concerning the tuning of your supercharged engine. That thing is going to be an absolute BEAST when you get it all tuned up. Resist the urge, at all costs, to romp on it until you've got all of your fuel and timing maps at least safe and have some decent monitoring of your engine.

I remember when I slapped the smaller pulley on my supercharger, the whine got much higher, sounded better and pulled as hard as my 2001 Nissan Maxima, which was no dog. It was almost scary to be on 32s doing that!

Props man, enjoy it!! Your pig is an inspiration!

Well I think it might have been a false alarm!! I loaded some premium fuel and some injector cleaner and it solved both problems. I also recorded a little bit of audio sorry for the quality I was by myself trying to record and run the throttle.

Damn. That is amazing!

Lou,

The wheels are 17x9 Walker Evans racing with the wide beadlock ring. The tires are 39x13.50 Red Label Krawlers.

The paint is my favorite.... Tower paint rattle cans. There was no sanding or clear, I just wanted to get some color down. I am planning on light sanding the entire truck, and spraying 2-3 more coats of paint. The paint is a single stage enamel so it should be easy to repair and shouldn't need a clear coat.

Ryan.

So that really is rattle can paint?

What color paint did you choose? Is that a Toyota color?

Yes the paint really is rattle can. The color is the stock '71 55 color that came on the pig. It is Cigna White and Nebula Green. I ordered the paint from Tower Paint, and they loaded it into spray cans. I had no experience painting. haha.

**This is no longer my pig it is owned by Bill Penny Toyota, but wanted to show some updates**

I sold the truck again after buying it back from Eric G in Chicago. Well I sold it to Zach Penny and he has been working away on some of the things I never was able to get done. I just wanted to continue the thread since I am having third thoughts and am waiting for the right time to buy it back. haha.
