In Australia someone has come up with a larger sub tank replacement for their diesel powered 250 that retains the spare tire carried underneath. It's said to increase range by 41%. Undercarriage photos can be seen at the website linked below.

Is it just me or by the looks of it, it sits couple of inches lower than the frame?

I installed a sub tank in my 40. After that experience I’ve never wanted to do it again. Caring a few jerry cans when needed is cheap easy and effective for the lower 48. “Maybe” after this Alaska trip I might have a different opinion. Even the week I spent tooling around the Australian Outback I only tapped into the 2nd tank once in our troopy rental.

I doubt the Alaska trip will change your mind. Will you be towing a trailer up the Dalton highway?

I'd enjoy a secondary tank just for interstate driving and towing purposes. I'm going to relocate the spare on my rig to a swingout and will evaluate DIYing a smaller fabricated steel sub tank at that time given the $2,500 cost of a LRA tank. Even 15 extra gallons would be awesome.

I’ve got a 25 gallon sub tank (50 total) on one of my 80s and have gotten deep into its capacity on trips in Mexico, Nevada, and Utah.

If you’re working, living, or touring in remote areas, multi-hour detours or round trips just to buy gas are wasteful of time, money, and fuel. I used nearly a half tank on an 80 just reaching a remote work location just a few weeks ago.

Poor range has plagued US market Land Cruisers for decades. I was disappointed and unsurprised to see Toyota continue that problem with the 250. It’s too bad because finally fixing that problem would have been a been a game changer for the platform’s actual utility.

Yes. That is where I’m most concerned about range. But 20 extra gallons will solve it.
