In Australia someone has come up with a larger sub tank replacement for their diesel powered 250 that retains the spare tire carried underneath. It's said to increase range by 41%. Undercarriage photos can be seen at the website linked below.

Is it just me or by the looks of it, it sits couple of inches lower than the frame?

I installed a sub tank in my 40. After that experience I’ve never wanted to do it again. Caring a few jerry cans when needed is cheap easy and effective for the lower 48. “Maybe” after this Alaska trip I might have a different opinion. Even the week I spent tooling around the Australian Outback I only tapped into the 2nd tank once in our troopy rental.

I doubt the Alaska trip will change your mind. Will you be towing a trailer up the Dalton highway?

I'd enjoy a secondary tank just for interstate driving and towing purposes. I'm going to relocate the spare on my rig to a swingout and will evaluate DIYing a smaller fabricated steel sub tank at that time given the $2,500 cost of a LRA tank. Even 15 extra gallons would be awesome.

I’ve got a 25 gallon sub tank (50 total) on one of my 80s and have gotten deep into its capacity on trips in Mexico, Nevada, and Utah.

If you’re working, living, or touring in remote areas, multi-hour detours or round trips just to buy gas are wasteful of time, money, and fuel. I used nearly a half tank on an 80 just reaching a remote work location just a few weeks ago.

Poor range has plagued US market Land Cruisers for decades. I was disappointed and unsurprised to see Toyota continue that problem with the 250. It’s too bad because finally fixing that problem would have been a been a game changer for the platform’s actual utility.

Yes. That is where I’m most concerned about range. But 20 extra gallons will solve it.

My thoughts, as someone who has owned two 100s, two 200s, rebuilt a 40 from the frame up, and has a 2025 premium 250 series with 4000 miles on it.

The 250 is subpar, in nearly every way. Quality is not there. At all.

Wind noise, terrible (like 20k car terrible).

Windshield literally rattles at speeds over 70mph (imagine someone riding on the hood and tapping the windshield with a quarter every second, nonstop). Dealer says no fix.

Passenger A pillar rattles. Dealer says no fix.

Driver and passenger AC vent rattle (loud). Dealer says no fix.

Brakes are terrible. Took two trips to get the TSB properly applied to stop the ridiculous squeal. Slowing from interstate or high speeds brakes are mushy. Braking in town, lots of times the car lurches while slowing down.

Rated for 22/25 mpg. It gets 17. Sometimes.

I could go on, but I won't. Just very disappointed so far.

Not really surprised by your experience, but thanks for being honest and putting it out there. If you had bought a 1958 maybe you wouldn’t be that disappointed since you would have paid less than what you did for a premium grade. Though I still think the 1958 is already way overpriced for what it is.

I took my 700OT to ppf this week and the shop gave me a loaner Tacoma with the 4 banger. I drove it for a week and imagine the Prado1958 experience is close to that. Plastics as hard as bones and the nvh on that truck is abismal. The engine has punch of the line but I could swear it was a diesel considering how much noise it makes.

Coming from a 200, I am glad I waited and went with a 300 (US variant at least). I now know I could not pay close to $80k and live with that 4 banger engine. $40k maybe, but Toyota wants at least $56k for a 1958. No thanks. Maybe a used one for the wife in three years or so when her vw cross atlas is out of warranty.

Careful. May upset those with rose colored glasses. The truth hurts.

Bro, did you even test drive?

There's some wind noise on the windshield of our GX, but it's only noticeable above 60mph, and it's mild at best. It's simply impossible to eliminate that with such an upright windshield design. There are no rattles, no brake issues, and fuel economy numbers that are extremely close to what they claim.

My biggest complaint, which is entirely an Overtrail sub-model issue, is the lack of overhead vents in the second row and the lack of climate controls back there as well. That said, that's purely an issue for everyone else, as I will never sit back there making it a non-starter for me personally lol.

It does indeed. This vehicle is not worthy of the badge.

I don't know what this means. Yes, on pavement? Meaning I should take it offroad on one of the many dozens of weeklong off pavement trips I took my 100/200/LX? Just to be even more disappointed? Pass.

No. Didn't test drive 3 of my 4 prior land cruisers. I trusted the brand/badge. My mistake, won't happen again.

Got 17.4 mpg out of my GX470 this weekend on a 130-mile highway jaunt (hilly 2-lane and some 4-lane). It's lifted, has 33s, 4.56 gears, and weighs 5,100# dry, but was beyond that with passengers and gear. On the way back I too mostly 4 lane (even hillier) and got 16 mpg.

17 mpg for a stock 4-banger rig in 2025 that isn't a 3/4 ton truck with a large gas V8 is pretty atrocious.
