I lost my mind today! I just got my first 40, a 74, so my youngest son can enjoy the 89' FJ62 I picked up for him last winter. The wife currently drives the FJC. This "new" 40 is all mine to love and abuse!

Jeebus, it sounds like I either joined a cult or I'm in need of rehab!

Haha, I haven't even graduated college yet and when I was bringing my FJ40 project to a close I stumbled upon a 1970 FJ55 that was a perfect project for a great price. Low and behold, my mom came home one day after I came home and asked, "Brian, what the hell is that ugly thing in the driveway and WHY THE HELL IS IT HITCHED TO YOUR CAR!?!" :D

Drive the nice one as a parts runner to fetch parts for the project one! The nice thing is, upon purchase of my second cruiser, my dad had already began building a 40x50 pole barn on our property, so the stars were definitely favoring the Sagittarius region that week!!

Great advice everyone. TY . Maybe some of you can use this OEM product for your conditions.;)

I really need to make some space for this hobby. 40x50 pole barn.....:hhmm:

For now Im getting to work on the 78. Its the NV4500 trans, TPI 350, and detroit in the rear that has helped me choose, also I just cant bear to disassemble the 76 again to weld new motor mounts and such.

Back in 96 I told my wife I was going to sell my FJ62 to buy a FJ45. She tells if I could could find one for under five grand I should keep the FJ62. I already had four cruisers (got a dozen now). Last year she found us another home with two garages and plenty of RV parking. A couple of days ago she says since no one is using the swining pool we should get rid of it and build another garage.:hhmm: I know I found a keeper.

To me your 78 looks like a 79 or newer. The gas tank is under the tub and the square bezel:confused:

John

I guess Ill be starting a build thread on this new project but for now a couple questions:

1.Which fuel pump will satisfy the tpi injection while not being too loud? Ive read a lot of reccomendations by searching but I'd hate to spend a lot of money on a pump and not be able to hear the radio.

2. Did my 1/78 come with auto locking front hubs? It has them now, they are Toyota hubs but Im a little nervous about them, Id rather have a set of warns'. Are the auto's reliable?

Thanks again everyone.

Answer to Question #1

I don't know

Answer to Question #2

I have never seen Auto Locking hubs on an FJ40. I'm not saying they did not have then, just that I have never seen them.

Now that you mention it John Im kind of  myself, The Mfg date is Jan 78 but the guy I bought it from kept saying 79. The title says 78 so thats what Ive been calling it. I would never doubt a mudder when he calls the year on your truck though...I guess Ill be calling it a '79 now.

Nice photo shop work ;)

That is actually a picture of what he has on his new rig.quote]

I think Marcopolo was referring to the bottle in post 24.

Do you think I should keep 'em? I was able to search up one other guy that found them on his early 78 fj40 but ive heard autos actually unlock in reverse.

BTW: HBD!

but ive heard autos actually unlock in reverse.

I think they disengage when switched to 2WD so the from axles are no longer turning and direction is changed. Birfields changed in length between 78/79. I don't remember these available for the pre 79 hubs. Check the steering arms between your two cruisers. The 76 would be the same as a 78 while the 79 and newer would be larger than your 76.

I can't see a problem here room in the garage for both.
:steer:

Well. Bit of an update on this one. I decided to part with the 76, it went to a good home. So now to ease my pain over the 76 Im working in earnest on the 79. Figured I'd post some progress.

Started Tearing it down (I dont think I'll ever learn my lesson):

Had to close up all the swiss cheese from factory stuff that went bye bye when the chevy came to town. The PO bolted all the motor mounts and trans mounts so in addition to the old shackle hangers (pre reversal) and other holes he drilled new ones for the 350 and nv4500. I burned all those off and welded them solid to the frame on scab plates to clean the frame up and stiffen them up a little.

Next...primarily to speed things up I galvanized the frame. First they dipped it in molten zinc to burn off the old paint. Then acid etched it in HCL and finally dipped it in an 850 degree Zinc galv bath. For $250 bucks it saved a lot of labor not to mention I dropped it off at 8:30 am yesterday and pcked it up at 1pm. Now I don't have to paint it with any crazy xpensive paint either. I just made sure all the welding was done (although I'm sure I forgot something).

Cleaned up the 350, Painted it with POR-15 engine enamal, I love that stuff....just like powder cote. I skipped a little back story though: I spent a couple days trying to get it running and was just about ready to give up till I realized the ECM was shorted out. The guys at Affordable Fuel Injection straightened me out and got her running like a champ.

I'll try to post up my progress cuz hell or high water I'm drivin this sucker this spring if it kills me. I hate being cruiserless again.

..."and snuck countless parts home so you can finish your fj40 restoration."
..."when I sell it (knowing that would give me more time to persuade her to let me keep them both)."

LOL, Oh how many parts have I bought with the bank account she can't look at to see what I'm doing...and how many parts are still hiding in the garage while slowly appear on the cruiser without her noticing ;)
And the second quote...yeah, my first wife I satisfied by putting a "for sale" sign on my 67 fj40 with a price I knew I would never get so I could buy time...Love it

Yes we are addicts, but hey at least it IS and investment well worth the cost of the obsession

if the heep starts better in the winter if its inside....its simple, just give her a block heater and an extension cord...hhhhmmmm maybe theres a reason im not married?

It actually has one but my wife is the type of person who .....well you'd see her driving down the highway with a boken extension cord draggin down the road.;)

While we're on the subject I was thinking of doing kind of a "lower forty" build on this one with 37 of 38's. I know I saw somebody do a lot of body cutting to keep a low center with big tires. I searched all over but couldnt find it. Anyone have any ideas?
