I'm not laughing at all. Have wanted and still do, to retrofit barn doors to my 79 piggy. So tired of that stupid tailgate and power window assembly. I know where there is a set. Have not pulled the trigger on them, because I have not been able to find anyone knowledgeable about the conversion. After seeing the images you posted, I've got a renewd interest. Everyone I've ever talked to, obviously knew as little as I, thinking the only rigs that ever shipped with them were the Troopys.

At the very least, you'll want the door frame and internals inside the pillar.

There's no way, that I can see, to adapt the jambs of a gated Pig to ambi-doors, without it quickly being a whole lot more work than it's worth.

There's vast differences of the jamb inner and rear face, and subtle variations in the rest, that'd prove difficult to replicate, blind.

That said, if there were more door pairs available, I could see it being feasible for someone with the wherewithal, to mimic the inner and outer frame for easy adaptation to a gated pigs arse....but we lack a resource for the doors and I've not the wherewithal.

With minimal fab work to the jambs, I could see an upper hatch being more feasible, from a "scratch" perspective, but still a task.

Oddly enough, TLCA posted a pic of TWRECK and posed the trivia question, "what did the 55 have that no other Cruiser had?" yesterday.

My first thought was an extra heaping dosage of port installed rust, but we all know the correct answer being the powered tailgate.

Seems Toyota learned the lesson on powered tailgates on Pigs. Not sure if that makes it rarer, but I have no desire to get personal with the cargo bay to maintain the relic.

Thank you for all the valuable information. I have never had the chance to physically look at the ambulance doors close-up just in pictures. What you are saying makes a hell of a lot of sense and I will continue probably, to deal with the gate, powered window abortion.
Since I'm brand new to this forum, where would you direct me to locate the correct original anti sway bar and associated links and pieces etc. for the rear of my 55?
T,
Andy

It's an entirely different opening, to say the least.

You're in the right sub form, being the FJ55 specific classifieds.

Start a thread listing your request and location, and replies will slowly trickle in. Not sure how many folks are in WA with parts pigs, so may have to pay shipping, but betting you'll wind up with one free.

Also, take pics of your Pig, go to the main section that's one up from this one, start a thread about your Pig and post pics.

Debating the merits of the swap, folks.

Not saying it won't happen, but was intended for the '76, which needs to be road worthy and commissioned by late spring.

Considering my current resources and track record, this could take time I don't have, based on a self imposed schedule of culling the herd, while there's still marketable life in the particular livestock chosen to liquidate, and that I need to have all of my stash gone from the storage units currently occupied by 3/1, so they can produce income.

Just throwing it out there. Having a chitty couple of weeks, my excuse for self doubting.

Will preface with, these parts are not cheap and this isn't a classified ad. Figured I'd allow others to know that, in a time of weakness, I'm in doubt, and see what becomes of it.

Had even thought about saving for the third Pig build, but that's so far out of sight right now, plus it'll probably be chopped, bobbed, and topped anyway.

Chris,

What would be wrong with just getting the 76 running and useable, stash the doors for another time. If you sell them now, you won't get what you paid, at least I never do.

In the beginning, you wanted to have a driver, until the 72 was done. Stay with that plan and focus on the restoration. The 76 is second in line. Sneak the doors in the basement when the Wife isn't looking. :)

Disclaimer: I've had my two Budweisers for the day!

sounds like you may need a break from the difficult and spend some time on the easy fixes. i have had to do that along the way. focus on an easy and cheap fix and conquer it. there are a hundred of them to do. things will be different in a couple more weeks.

Putting this back out there, in the event anyone is interested.

Not a classified ad and I won't post a price.

I do have new taillights and James' rebuilt hinges to go with.

I was unaware and overly ambitious when embarking on the first Pig, then added a second, and the realization that it's going to take years to complete has set in, so I'm reconsidering the scope of work on the '76, in an effort to get it on the road quicker.

Can't even think of a third, at this point....
