I took the front end body parts off my truck in december to get some body work done and tried to start it yesterday and It will not fire up but it will crank. I had the battery checked and charged, starter is new, there looks to be fuel in the carb window. Its about at the 1/2 way line. Fuel pump does not look like its ever been replaced. Carb was rebuilt a year and a half ago and fuel filter was changed then.
I am thinking fuel pump but thought I would reach out for some opinions

I read thru a recent thread but wanted to start one to grab some quick answers.

What is the gas level in the carb window?

Check for spark and if you have one, pour a little gas in the carb and crank it.

Just look down the carb.throat youll see if gas is going in,pull a spark plug see if there is spark.Pull off any extra fuel filters up by the carb. Mike

It sounds like i need to take the top off of the carb to do some checking. The gas level in the little window is at about 1/2. Gas was new when I parked it and tank is about 1/2 full. Its only been sitting for about 60 days. could gas go bad that fast?

How do I check for a spark? That is what I feel like might I might not be getting. I can smell gas when I try to start it. Its not flooded though. I know that for sure.

X2 on the gas poured through the carb after removing the air filter. (Be careful, if it backfires a short flame will go out the carb so keep gas and flamables away from it). What I normally do is take out all the spark plugs, crank it for like 30 seconds and then put the spark plugs in again, pour some gas (4 - 5 spoonfulls) and crank it without hitting the pedal until it starts running. Make sure your battery is strong, if it is cranking it to slow, it wont start.

You can check for spark by removing the lead connected to the spark plug and holding the end of it a few mm's from the engine block and turning over the engine. You should get a nice blue spark between the end of the lead and the block. Just be careful to avoid getting shocked and catching your hand/arm in any moving parts.

Ok. I will see if I can figure that out. Hopefully i wont get lit up by anything.

UPDATE: I took off the air cleaner/carb cover. looking down into the carb the chamber is completely dry. I tried cranking it to see if gas entered, NOTHING. Then I got my mom to sit in the truck, crank it with the choke pulled out, and pump the gas, NOTHING.

Does that mean the fuel pump is shot?

Pour some gas in it and see if it runs. If it won't run wo/o pouring gas in it, then maybe the inlet valve is stuck shut or the fuel pump isn't delivering. Try rapping on the inlet at the top cover with the handle of a screw driver and see if it unsticks.

If you're obsessive like me and need to know for sure you can take the intake fuel line off the carb and stick an empty bottle on the end and crank the engine while pumping the gas a few times. If gas comes out then it's not a pump problem. I ended up doing that and then pouring gas down the carb while flooring the gas pedal to get my 55 started again. I couldn't see that gas was getting to the carb either for my case.

X2 Gas can and does go bad alot faster these days then before, pour gas in the carb, if it runs, then start eliminating things, pull the fuel line off the carb and stick it in a cup and have someone turn the motor over, if it pumps fuel, fill the cup up and look at it, mine was 1/2 full of water. drained the tank, added new fuel, changed fuel filter and now runs like a champ .. ;) most of the time these things are simple and we make them harder on ourselfs.

Update 2

Today I poured some gas into the carb and tried to start it. DIDNT WORK! man this is frustrating since it ran fine when I parked it in December. I pulled the lines off of the carb and when I tried to crank it with the choke out no fuel came out of them.
I ordered a new fuel pump from Toyota that should be here Friday. It doesnt sound like the spark plugs are bad but does anyone have a next step suggestion? I wouldve thought by pouring some gas into the carb I couldve gotten a little fire up.

It could be a ground wire problem. Make sure your battery terminals are clean and the ground to the frame is clean. remove the cable and use a wire brush. I had the same issue with a 75 I had.

Fuel

Well if you have no fuel to the carb then that's a prob but it should have cranked a little when you poured some in the carb
Might try a can of ether so you dont have too worry about too much or too little and it will fire on ether even if it wont on gas.

Try the spark test even if you do not think that is it
If no spark and no gas your ignition circuit is proabably dead and shutting off both

Back track on the fuel ---is there fuel coming out of the pump, fuel in the filter, will fuel come out of the tank?---just disconnect the lines and see

YOU maybe moving in the wrong direction with this.
Have you checked for spark from your coil (key ON)? ,everytime you open the points there should be a spark from the coil.
There is no where in your post where you said you have done that.
The fuel pump can be tested easily with this method .
Take the input hose off and stick in a gas can and take the input line to the carb out and stick it in an empty can and crank. You will know if the FP is working or not.
You can do this on the terurn hose also if you don't want to take the input line from the carb, but ristriction in that line might give misleading result.
I use gas into the carb directly all the time because my engine rests for months at a time. YOU need to do it few times and keep trying it ,if you know you have good spark reaching all the plugs.
Just keep it simple.

start

Do me a favor and take a jumper cable from the negative on the battery to the cage holding the coil on.

Let us know when it starts.

Thats a fact--that got me for a few minutes plus running power to my carb solenoid but forgetting to give it a ground:o

You still owe us a spark check:grinpimp::lol:!
