So, to tighten the hand brake lever at the firewall, do you turn the long nut to expose more male thread or less male thread??

I recall moving the cable, so the nut is on the other side of that cable-sheath-clamp.
Factory has it pinched... It's been a bit, but I think most of the adjustment is down at the drum.
Lengthen the housing. Back the little nut off and tighten the long nut. You might need to wiggle the housing so it doesn't twist up when tightening the long nut
Actually, turn the jam nut clockwise (loosening its clamping effect) then turn the large "nut" counterclockwise, to effectively length the sheath. Finally tighten the jam nut to lock the adjustment in place.
Interestingly, clockwise could mean either direction depending on perspective.
