well, not a chimney, but a wooden houseing for the stove pipe that actually carrys the hot gasses up n out. i am in the process of hanging a flat screen tv over my fireplace. i'm planning on running cables. wires, what have you thru this space, so that when it exits at the blind spot (behind the tv) they won't be seen. the tv is 40+ inches wide and centered over the fire box. the houseing is 52" wide. so, has anyone else run into this, and how did you protect the wires? i assume that the stove pipe is tripple walled, but cant be entirly sure. am i worring about something that's a non issue? and dose anyone have an idea how to protect these wires?

Is it a wood burning fire place or a gas type fire place?

Wood type fire places get a lot hotter that the gas fired ones.

I will recomend an alternate routing of your wires to stay within the intended spirit of the building codes.

Not sure, but it sounds like he is talking about the modern faux chimney.... I would think it's okay to run wires in the open space of a faux wood chimney.

Not if its venting from a heat source. Pvc covering wire -heat , no no. Mike

beau, has it right....the box houses the tripple wall stove pipe as well as the mangf fire box. i'm sorry for the rather loose discription of my project and the confusion it caused. i'm sure there's elevated temps inside when opperating the fire place, but nothing too dramatic. after all it is wood, and widely used in modern home construction these days. btw i converted the fireplace to n. gas a few years ago, and only use it about 10-20 evenings a year, and then only for under two hours. the wires i'm talking about are the A/V cables. i think you can call 'em power limited cables and as such are not a code issue. ( sorta like you'r low voltage garden lighting.) still- i'd rather not have to replace them two or five years down the road! because they are so baked that the insulation id breaking off. i'm an electrican and the 110vac recp, is easyly installed. but i'm going to construct that to a much higher std. that what the internal conditions would dictate ( no, you won't find the right parts for this at a homedepo)

I have Romex running in my chimney box so it must be code, but it is at least 12 inches from the flue. If you are talking about signal cables and not power, then it probably won't matter. The triple wall tube is right next to things that are more flammable, like the framing. I wish I didn't know this because I had to replace the SOB when my fireplace rusted out. It wouldn't hurt to check you codes first.
