With the Winter Fun Run just a little more than a week away I imagine it is time to get the details out :D.......

The Plan: As per our usual set-up there will be two groups meeting on friday and early group led by myself and a later afternoon group led by Trollhole (marshall). We will be meeting as usual adjacent to the BP gas station (moonshine minimart) at the city park located on NC highway 107 a few miles south of Cullowhee, NC. GPS Lat/Lon for the meeting location are N. 35* 17' 53.05" / W. 83* 8' 47.79"

The morning group will be meeting at the park next to the BP starting around 11AM friday morning and we will leave by 12 noon sharp so please try to be there by 11AM to allow for any last minute gas needs or food so that we can be moving out at noon. We do have spotty cell phone reception at the meeting location so if any new comers are having a hard time finding the meeting place feel free to give me a call; JP 706 394 7045

The afternoon group will begin meeting around 4pm and will be leaving the meeting location by 5pm. Also the PM group will be taking the more direct gravel route to the first nights camp as to not be out on the trails after dark.

The Camping schedule: We will be as in our past Cullowhee running the trail system east to west...... The first night we will be camping at Sugar Creek Gap and the following night at upper Lost Knob bald and if it is unavialable we will camp at the bigger lower bald. The reason for these locations is that they both lie at the end of the gravel roads which will allow easy access to our friends who are not camping to join us in the evenings for some cruiser talk around the fire

To the first timers to Cullowhee that will be camping I urge you to come prepared from a fuel and food stand point to be able to stay out on the trail system from Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon. Once we enter the trail system on Friday we will not be leaving the trail system unless in an emergency situation. So come prepared for a weekend of camping and wheeling in as remote an area you can get in Western NC :D

The Camping List:

Cabin Group:

Thought this might help.

Cabin will be open all weekend long. You can come and go as you please. I will post direction tomorrow on how to get to the cabin.

The cabin will be open Thursday night for those that want to get an early start. I will be coming up Friday afternoon to the cabin first and then over to the meeting spot that JP stated above. From there we will ride up on gravel roads to the first camping spot. Those that want to stay can and those that want to go back to the cabin can follow me back. Sat morning Rick will be leading a group from the cabin up to the campsite to meet up with the rest and wheel all day and travel to the second campsite on the bald. The cabin group will be hanging out in the area doing a little fishing and picking up Pizza for the group and then heading up to the bald via gravel roads. There is a section that will involve a little skill to get to the bald. BUt if I can do it in an unlocked 80 anyone can do it.

Then we will hang out and wait for the main group to meet us for some pizza and food. Build a fire enjoy some good conversations and then head back to the cabin that night via gravel roads.

SO basically you have the option to do what ever you want. You can camp, stay at the cabin or just come up and ride for the day. It all depends on what you want.

Just remember the house has 4 double beds. So it can sleep aboud 6-8 comfortably. The rest will have to sleep on the couch or floor upstairs or downstairs.

Sounds good Marshall. FYI everyone I will be up there by Friday night. I will have my CB and FRS on channel 4 and will put a sign up where you turn off to the cabin's driveway. I won't have the CB on when I'm in the cabin. I'll meet the group at the park Friday and wheel with them and ride back down with Marshall at the end of the day and then follow Rick Saturday up and back down. Does this work with your plans Marshall?

Guys,

Once again I am going to have to drop out on this trip. I have been looking forward to this trip for a while. Just got back in town from the Builders show in Orlando for the last week and the pile on my desk will have me here all weekend. One of these days I will actually get to attend one of the events that this club puts on. Please take lots of pics so I can live vicariously through this website. Have Fun!!

Camping

Hey JP, Marshall, and others,

Dad and I are still planning on bringing our 55 up from Charleston to play for the weekend. Been working hard on it and looking forward to meeting all of you face to face. We will be camping, but we are towing the 55 up there. Anyone know how far I can expect from Charleston to Cullowhee? I'll mapquest it but if anyone has a general route to the meeting point let me know. Also, will there be somewhere I can leave my tow rig for the weekend? Not sure at this time which party we will meet up with but I'm hoping we'll see JP early.

Stu and Rob - someone else can give you better directions but you can stick mostly to interstates and highways if you want (26 to 40). You can probably leave the tow rig at the cabin - Marshall should chime in.

Can't wait to see y'all and the Piggie.

I will also have 2 tow rigs from Charleston. We cant leave until about noon on Fri so that will be putting us in a little after 5:00. Can we get directions to the cabin, we will be camping, I guess we can get to the campsite after that. My e-mail is dbenke@bellsouth.net
Thanks, David

David I will be leaving from the cabin around 5 on friday to lead a group up to the campsite.

If you will call me and give me an update on your ETA around 2 on friday so we might be able to work something out. That goes for the rest of you also.

If any of you cannot make it by 5pm you will have to hang out at the cabin and either find someone who knows where to go or can wait at the cabin until the morning and go out with the early trail group.

Direction to the cabin.

Directions to the cabin from what I can remember.

Two ways to do this. If your in G'ville I'd got the Asheville way

If your around Clemson Then I would go the Cashiers way.

Greenville

hwy 25 North to hwy 26

when you get to Asheville take I40 West exit 32b

At exit 32B, take ramp LEFT to I-40 West (18.4 mi)

At exit 27, take ramp RIGHT to US-74 West (1.4 mi)

Take ramp RIGHT to US-19 South / US-23 West / US-74 / Great Smoky Mountains Expy (20.6 mi)

Take exit 85 toward Cullowhee / US-23-Br / W Carolina Univ (1.8 mi)

Turn LEFT (east) onto SR-107 (6.5 mi)

Go past Western Carolina

Turn RIGHT (southwest) onto Cullowee Mountain Road(3.8 mi)

There is some sort of baseball field on the right

Bear RIGHT ON DRIVEWAY(west)

This is where it gets tricky. The driveway off the house has no markers. Steve will make sure to have something out on the road to help you know where to turn.
There will be a shed with some picnic tables under it on this road to the left. Once you cross over the stream the road forks (stay right) house will be on the right about 50 yards up on the right.

If you get lost Call me @ 864-414-0563 or try the FRS radio channel 10

********************************************************************

Directions for Clemson area People

Hwy123/76 into Seneca

Take Right on Hwy 28 for about 15.2 miles

Take Right on Hwy 107 for about 41.4 miles

You will go through the town of Cashiers (cool town)

If your meeting the camping group the BP and Park will be on your left.

If your going to the cabin group keep going on hwy 107 for about 2.3 miles and take a left on speedwell rd

Then see directions from Cullowee Mountain Road above.

If you get lost don't panic. Take your time. Go back and recheck where your last good postion was. If your camping and meeting the 11am crowd and cannot get to the spot before they leave call JP. He will determine if they can wait or that you just need to go to the house and come join the group who will be going out around 5pm that night. Do not attempt to go on the trails alone to find them. Camping spots are not guaranteed, they may have to make adjustments friday night. You can get lost on these trails easily if you do not know the area. If you decide to go it alone the club will not come and look for you.

Study this map. and print out the directions above. Always carry a road map or maps of the roads you are traveling.

I could use a few sticks for Thurs night. Payment in beer and venison cube steak if that works!

I still owe you from helping pull the sick Piggie out of the woods after the last trip.
