Windshield replacement challenges; need rivets part # (1 Viewer)

I've contacted six or seven glass companies to replace the windshield in the 100. Mentioning rivets - phone, text, email - to these guys ends the conversation faster than telling a Lexus dealer your credit score is 500. Meanwhile, the crack in the windshield is now about 20"... and growing.

I had an appointment with Safelite. The technician came out to the lobby, "I see your note about needing rivets... yeah, we'll need to order those." That was October; no word back and multiple attempts to contact that shop - directly and via corporate.

At this point, I think the way to go is to order the rivets, make an appointment at Safelite and drop the 100 with the rivets in a bag taped to steering wheel with a note: "DO NOT USE SCREWS. USE THESE" and follow the truck back to the shop to make sure the technician is on board.

But... I need an assist. Can anyone tell me which of the handful of part #s I've found on the interwebs do I need for a 2006 100?

I believe 90269-04053 is the original replacement rivet, but these did not work for me because my holes had been enlarged with screws (the rivet wouldn't bite). I ended up using a larger non-Toyota rivets, but I think @2001LC or someone else found another Toyota part # for larger diameter rivet that may've been used on the Camry. I'll try to dig up the thread.

Thanks @aging fleet. I found 90269-04053 in a thread - maybe the thread you're looking for. The over-sized rivet mentioned in that thread is 90269-05034. I guess the thing to do is buy both - if those are the correct over-sized rivets. Any idea how many are needed? Toyota sells them individually.

Sorry to hear about the trouble finding a shop. Maybe someone can chime in with a recommendation in the Atlanta area?

I used these, 90269-04053 but found 2 of the 4 holes on either side were too big for these.

I've also seen 75547-51021 used.

There's a slightly larger Toyota plastic rivet (for Camry I think?) but I'll have to dig for the part number.

You need 8 rivets total, 4 per side. Get a few extras...my installer buggered up the whole thing and wasted 5 of them. Then told me I should have gotten more hahaha.

I think you'll need 4 per side. To keep things interesting, @HoustonFj80 used Toyota PN: 90269-06013.

Sizes per his notes:
90269-04053 factory rivets (3.2mm)
90269-06013 (4.8mm)
90269-05034 (4.9mm) (size per measurements found on a Russian website)
75547-51021 (???mm)

The rivet holes enlarge, for one of two a reasons:

• Running drill bit though.
• Metal screws.

Both of which and use of wrong type rivet, breaks paint away from body (Bare metal)! So we must paint.

I use epoxy primer and POR-15 or just one or the other. Paint hole with a Q-tip, after preparing metal (POR-15 metal prep). Once paint just past tacky. I check hole for rivet fitment. If rivet hole to large for OEM rivet, I coat hole with more paint. I'll build-up paint until rivet fits sung. We don't want to building up/coat excessively thick. If hole so large 3 to 5 coats, won't make small enough for OEM size, move to next size rivet. POR-15 is incredible tough when applied properly. But even it, on and edge of hole, can breakaway. So we don't build up excessively.

I have a question on this, as my windshield just took a nice whack above the passenger wiper arm. This could be considered a complete hatchet-job, but has anyone ever replaced the rivets with a riv-nut and used sealant on the bolts? I feel like, for whatever reason the universe has deemed necessary, I'm destined to replace my windshield every 4-5 years. Could, in theory, make this process a little more idiot proof for the installers.

I've seen it mentioned before where a couple folks have done it. Can't recall long term reviews. My concern would be if the rivnuts sitting a little proud of the mating surface would obstruct a completely flush install of the molding.

The rivet thing is really not that complicated. I'd probably only go the rivnut route if the holes had already been messed with (screws/drilled out) and it was going to take a lot more work to correct for proper rivet use.

And you might increase the chance of wind noise due to the gap a rivnut would put between the trim and pillar.

You guys ever wonder if mechanics, glass techs, off-road shop techs, tire installers... when no one's looking, go to 'Mud for information?

@2001 I just added POR-15 and a ziplock bag with a couple q-tips to my "kit" for the installer. That's great (!) info.

I'll probably add a $20 bill to that kit 'cause I'm walking a fine line between possible reactions - from "I got you man." to "Are @$#%ing kidding dude?" Maybe if I lead with "I read this on a forum... " Mechanics and doctors love that.

The other option is to ask them to install the glass then handle all the trim work yourself. As crazy as it sounds, I'd be very tempted to go this route especially if they're installing it at my house. It would take me 3x as long but at least I'd know how it was all put together.

I got lucky several times with our local safelite – they ordered the parts from toyota I think after insisting that the job needed rivets, etc. I'm on my 4th windshield in 10 years – that windshield policy I added has been fantastic as they have covered full OEM glass for all.

@MongooseGA every time my wife or kid is driving and ends up behind a dumptruck or construction trailer, I just look at them say "What do you think - paint chip or a broken windshield? I'm thinking windshield with this one."

All 100 series 98-07, use same rivet. Shop is full of it!

We've two side modeling variations. One longer on top portion (in roof rain gutter) than other, either fit all.
We have three OEM windshield variation. Green or gold tint and the very costly night view (NV). NV is option found in only a few LX470.

I called my dealer and asked where they have glass done - specifically for the 100 Series. The service guy recommended the place they take any cars that come in and they already knew the deal with all the rivets etc.

On an unrelated note, on my 06, I lifted up the thin rubber strip and found this. What's the easiest way to cut the little tail off the rivet? All the others are fine
