Windshield Down - Top Speed?

Provided all latches are good - is there a recommended speed that should not be exceeded with the windshield down?
If your asking if the latches will hold, my first FJ40 didn't have a safety latch on the hood so the latches were all that held it down and it's more likely to catch air than the wind screen. Latch failure should not be a problem.

Other than that, I've ridden motorcycles over 100mph with no protection other than a pair of aviator style sunglasses. That was pretty much SOP in those days.

Klunky Kris was able to hit hiway speeds when his hinges snapped after he donned some goggles.

He had some bad moments there before he was able to pull over and disentangle his bikini top from around him!!

Yes I remember this event. I think he snapped a hinge wheeling at the Coal Miners classic. I ride motorcycles year round and find the winters pretty cruel to your face even with a fullface lid. These trucks are cool with the screen down but I'm not sure if the police will have much of a sense of humor about it. I was told many years ago in Maryland NOT to do it again in my CJ. Watch out for rocks as I've caught them on bike in the legs and on the helmet a few times ouch!!!

Fast enough to have a bug take an eye out

I've done 75-80 mph going to work in my V8 powered CJ, but I had wrap around sun glasses, my hair was braided, and I was smiling all the way...just under an hour each way. I should note that I had also strapped the shield down, and was young and foolish.

Would I do it now that I am 20+years older  ...nope, I now cruise (when I get the chance) nice and slow, and I enjoy the ride a whole lot more :hillbilly:

Oh, as far as recommended top speed...it gets hard to breath at around 100 mph...I did that on a Ski-Doo...also when I was young and foolish.

I've run mine up to 120 kph / 75 mph with the screen down & no problems. As long as your hood latches work it's not likely to go anywhere because the air can flow through underneath the screen. I do recommend that you also keep gloves for the frosty nights & try to avoid driving screen down at dusk. Warning - once it's down you're not going to want to put it back up.

holy huge cans batman

If there is a common failure point/speed - then yes, I would like to know. That said, it sounds like as long as everything is functioning properly - it's a non-issue.

Might have to pick up a set of these to complete the look though. . .

If you're worried about it, put a tie-down over the windshiled as a "safety strap*"

* in no way am I responsible for lost teeth due to said "safety strap" letting go..... :)

I slow down when I can't keep my lips together:D. I've never worried about the windshield hooks failing. About 65mph is tops for me.

Make sure you take it over some really sweet jumps while your up to speed!

Later,

you guys are lucky in pa if you fold down the w shield the cops cant see your inspection sticker and pull you over .had this happen several times and gave up just fold it down off road now good luck

At highway speeds around here (65 mph) I would rather my windshield take kicked-up gravel or a rock than my face!

When I drive around with my windshield down, I rock an old-school pair of Oakley amber lens ski goggles. Good for day or night. I keep them in the glove box for just that purpose. About 45mph is the fastest I have gone with the windshield down.

You will definitely need goggles to be safe. I've gone highway speeds many times, but it's not something I would normally do if there was another option.

You also want to watch out for the thick rubber gasket between the windshield frame and the body. On an extended ride one day, the gasket whipped back from the wind and smacked me in the eyes! If it doesn't sound like it, I can tell you that it REALLY hurts. ;)
