Wind wing window weatherstrip install science.

Ive searched for the last couple of days for a tech thread on this particular subject but could not find anything specific. This was my disclaimer for those jumping to the "use the search function"!


Now, Is there a science to the install of this weather strip piece that goes in between the glass and the frame of the wing window for my 1972 forty'.

It almost appears as though the frame needs to be slightly pryed open before sliding the glass in with the w/s on it, and I know the ever so slight pry of this frame will without doubt damage it, so prying would not be an option. i cant for the life of me figure this out Also when the w/s is installed on the glass, it buckles out at corners causing almost bulge this i thought i would cut a slit to make it fit. Before I try a forceful install does anyone have any pointers tricks or suggestions.

I'll be redoing mine shortly, so I'll be watching this thread. Where did you purchase the weatherstriping? Is it the same thickness as the old one?

If im not mistaken its from spector and the previous wing window was shot so I cant compare their sizes. I hope its the right part, ordered part like 5 years ago and just now getting to this repair.

I've got the weatherstriping for the entire wing, I hadn't thought about the glass seal. You may want to check the part number if you still have the paper work... it may have a cross ref to the OEM part number 68175-60020 (both sides).

Or you may want to try a cutting a piece of bicycle inner tube and using adhesive sealant to keep it all together.

I recently picked up this one:

And it was just a matter of cutting out the old one and fitting in the new one... just patience, no special tools

In my case the w/s turned out to be about exactly an inch too big on the bottom - not sure how that is possible unless I bought the wrong one or the doors are off of something else and it turned out I was missing the metal frame so for the moment the glass is just floating there....

Thanks ive seen the wing window seals, but they are entirely different. I am almost certain the part i have is a correct part # BUT i will verify if I can find the bag it shipped in.

The tire inner tube might be a better and easier fix, wow what a great cheap and resourceful idea for me as this is not a resto, its a get it running and complete.

hmmm.... I got my junk apart now too... my glass seals did not look too bad of shape.. But I would be interested in changing them if the gasket was good... keep posting up if you get it to work

not this this helps, I did it a few months back on my restoration on a non-USA 40 series wing windows and it wasnt too hard, glass has to be out of metal frame then the one piece rubber goes over the little rods on top and bottom and then start forcing into groove.

Thanks Roberto im going to try a little liquid soap to lube and if this doesnt work Im gonna try the bike tire inner tube and glue method.

The WS I bought from SOR for my 73 wings was way too fat (comparing to original rubber), it would never fit. I ended up just using black RTV to reset the glass. I didn't think of the bike tire innertube, that would be about right.

Ya 73tlcv8 its too fat , exactly the term.....Almost as if it would require a machine to do the install due to the force needed to make it fit....

When I did the wings on my old 54 GMC P/U it took 2 of us to push the wings into the channels with the new seals...was not easy. FWIW

@KZRSOIZE this is great thread, thanks for putting together. I'm doing a full resto on my doors and was curious how you removed the cam nut from the frame assembly? Not sure if it is threaded on or just frozen and needs to be pressed off. Appreciate the help!

Frozen. PB blaster or kroil. It's keyed so only slide it off. Clean the rust off the shaft prior with emery cloth or wire wheel.

That’s probably just frozen, not threaded for sure. Did you remove the chrome pivot piece from the top already? Undo that, tilt the wing out of the frame a little and gently tap the bottom of the wing so it comes out.
when you get to the seal this thread was originally about, I bought some 1/25” black silicone sheet from Amazon and cut it into a 2” strip. Stretched it over the edge of the glass and slowly pushed in. Once it was in place and the wing back in the door frame, I just trimmed the excess with a razor blade.

This is exactly what I ordered directly from Toyota... they were not cheap.

I did mine a few years ago BUT my home attempt was going like yours. I finally gave in and took mine to a glass shop. They have plenty of equipment for working with these issues. Also , it was not a lot of cash.
