Warn PowerPlant™ Dual Force HP Winch VS the 8274

The capacity is about the same but the dual force gives me a compressor. I can get the Dual force for 300 bucks less brand new. It seems like a no brainer but I have not used either of these. I have had a 1/2 dozen Warn Winches in my life but never either of these models.

Seems like the 8274 is "THE" winch for the cruiser, but how does it beat the same capacity with a compressor for 300 bucks less? Give me a reason to go with the 8274 cause right now I'm not seeing one.

Hi All:

You can buy a good, used M8274 here in the PNW USA for $400 - 600 if you pay attention to Craigslist, Little Nickel, etc.

The beauty of the M8274 (besides its simplicity and hard pulling) is how re-build-able it is, especially with Warn headquarters being in Oregon.

Regards,

Alan

The spur drive design of the 8274 is far more efficient that either planetary or worm drive winches. The 8274 was very under rated at 8000 lbs even with the original motor. With the upgraded motors of the newer models it really should be rated at more then 8000 lbs capacity.

You really can not class it with any of the other 8000lbs rated winches.

Mark...

I'm not that impressed with the built-in compressor option, personally...

If you need on-board-air, consider MUDRAK's York bracket and a York 210 compressor. Any search for OBA will show a few builds.

Love my rebuilt 8274!

did you really want this wall in front of your rad .. ?

My grandma said, isin't smart put all your eggs :hillbilly: in the same basket ..

buy a compressor and winch ..

agreed,

being a new 8274 owner i am glad i got the one i did

Keep the air and winch separate. Less chances for a failure of both systems caused by a failure of one system.

There's a reason it's $300.00 less...

That compressor party winch is gay. :meh:

 Thanks for saying that out loud, I was thinking the same thing! A marketing exercise for Warn IMO.

Get the 8274 if for no other reason than it looks fawking cool on the front of an FJ40.

And I love mine, it has seen some very heavy use and just keeps on chugging.

Congrats. Have you read Flintknapper's thread on rebuilding them?

The one in my post is the HFS from CCOT, it has a pretty good fit. And it lives up to it's name.

Edit: Looks like it is on sale for $240 right now

yeah than you have to buy a crossmember for 90.00....i was on the phone and backed out....christmas is here short on extra funds...

get you some square tubing cut some angles in the ends and slap it on

somthing like this would take no time and cheap

I understand Warn's idea of the powerplant but like most others I don't like having too many eggs in one basket. I like seperate systems.
