Why are Pigs Expensive?

If you search craigslist and Buy New & Used Cars, Research Prices, Sell My Car, Find Auto Dealers you will come across one that fits your needs. I searched for about 4 months and finally stumbled across mine. I got it pretty cheap and ended up paying more for shipping than I did for the LC. I have to say that I would have likely spent more for the great condition it is in. I bought my site unseen. Just a handful of pictures.

Laguna That one in Reno is in fine shape as far as the body looks in the pictures. That's the one I'd choose.
 
I don't think they are expensive at all. FJ-40s still command more money. Any other desirable car from 30 years ago is getting crazy money.

nice ones are pretty damn rare and get big dollars. there's a good column in C&D by Peter Egan about vintage car prices this month.
 
Expensive?!? Mine was free (other than the fuel to pick it up)!! The expense comes in getting or fabbing all the unobtanium sheet metal and all the other "unique to '55" parts.
 
Good points... it's just hard to convince the wife that a rusty old Land Cruiser that barely runs, and can't go straight on the road, and can't stop, and doesn't have an interior, is worth $3k

Lol That's like her trying to convince you that the new pair of heels she bought are worth $200. :rolleyes:

That is just a bad price, don't care where you are, a $3000 55 is in much better condition than as you described. 55s' expensive? Repair and maintaining (in MY OPINION voice here) them represents a much greater investment than resale could ever (read big time money looser) regain. Invision all the expense of a 40 plus plenty of unobtanium (heard it first here) and rare parts, there you go. Have to have an irrational need to drive truly one of the best 4 X 4 s' to ever roll the planet. Know why the 55 has more capacity? So they can carry the tools to maintain the road to Jeep heaven! DUHHHH!

Howdy! After 22 years in a Piggy, I am just a bit biased, but yea, Pighead's got it dead on. Early April I went on a scenic run with a bunch of 80"s and 100's to check out the desert flora and fauna, as it was really good this year. We just happen to end up going right thru the middle of AZ Rocks, which is the spring gathering of Mini's and Runners' for TTORA. Hundreds of rigs on the trails. Everything from stockers to tube buggies/trailer queens. Instead of just the normal courtesy waves ya do on the trails, over half the rigs we went by gave us verbal recognition, as in "wow, ooh, neat, niiiice", and of course the occasional "what the hell is that". The best part is that my wife was riding with, and she dug it as much as I did. We were smiling about it all weekend. There just ain't NOTHIN like a PIG! John
 
Inkpot, I totally agree with you on the hoots and hollars. When my shipper was bringing the pig here to south Texas from Tucson AZ he was amazed at all the complements and excitement toward my pig. He even had a couple 3 and 4 k offers. My pig keep your hands off...
 
PIG $$

I have a 40 (stock) and my current 55 (under construction). I purchased (horse traded) for the 40 not running and I gave $300 for my 73 pig with no engine but in real good shape. After looking at what I spent on the 40 and what the 55 has cost so far I wouldn't call my 55 that expensive. I will say this - I could sell the 40 and make a pretty good profit as compared to what I have in it. As for the 55, I just couldn't see being able to get back the money spent on it but I didn't buy it for that purpose. I guess like everybody else has stated - YOU JUST GOT TO LOVE A PIG to get in the game. My good friend says it is the ugliest thing he has ever seen but I love the way it looks and I think it will make a great 4x4 when I'm finished. To sum it up - any vehicle project will usually turn into a money pit of sorts but you got to expect that going in. Just enjoy the work. My 2 cents worth.:steer:
 
It ALL depends on where you are in the country... Everytime there is an argument about how much a rig is worth, people go back and forth about it and someone's feelings always get hurt. I don't care what it is, 30+ year old rust free vehicles in the north get 2 to 3 times more than they do in the south. Its very simple supply and demand (always with exceptions). I paid $1500 bucks for my 72' FJ55 in decent condition. Had I driven the truck up to MI or MN and found a buyer, I probably could have got 3-4K for it. Now, saying that, I think its funy that the guy who initially asked this question is from Cali which is the meca for all things Toyota 4X4. my two cents...
 
Pigs are probably the cheapest of the pre-60 series cruisers. Their aftermarket support is probably the most expensive though (I don't go shopping for 25 parts often, so I can't compare there).

Pigs are also the coolest cruisers ever.
 
Lots of deals still out there. Most of them have been totally neglected, which is why they're cheap. If anyone thinks their rusted-out, beat-up, sittin' in a barn for 4 years FJ-55 is worth more than a grand, they're outta their gord. On the other hand, it takes alot of time and money to fix up a $1000 junker to where it's a daily driver, or a bad-ass wheeler. When the work has been done by someone who knows their s**t, and doesn't try to pass off a rig with no oil in the tranny or some other BS like that, then you can see where it's worth it to spend a little more. With that said, I also strongly advise against buying a rig off of e-bay. Unless you can physically look at the rig inside and out, you must assume the seller is lying about everything.
