So, I have driven Guzzler (the 1984 FJ-60) from CO down to NM to be ready to sacrifice the important parts for this truck. Mostly that means the OME suspension. I'm going to try and keep the rest of the truck together (we have a set of stock 60 springs in storage) and then either sell it (advert: it's East Coast Beautiful!), donate it to a charity, or part it out when that time comes.

Aside from having a 2F, and a little issue with the drivers side window regulator as I went to badge into the employee parking lot (it wouldn't close more than 3/4 of the way--something inside the regulator is just spinning) it really drives nicely. I did 65-70mph most of the way (other than going over Raton and Glorieta passes, I did about 35 up those), and even got just north of 14mpg. Not bad for a carbureted, 4 speed, lifted-but stock geared 60 I must say.

...but I will definitely enjoy having more power, and not having to stop all the time just to get gas! I should be able to do the trip nonstop (and nearly halfway back) on one tank of fuel. I can in my faux-lix, the Blue-Jay 40, or the HJ-61.

Once I got Guzzler up to the shop tonight, I pulled one of my 1HZ IPs, so that I can get one rebuilt and try it on this engine to see if we can't make it clatter.

I also played with the power supply and the door wiring to see if I can figure out the power windows and locks for the front door. I have the power windows for the drivers side figured out, and the passenger side as well. I *think* I even understand how to wire the two together so that I can control the passenger side with the driver side switch. Same for the locks--I *think* I get it. Will take some wire scraps to test out my theory next time I get to work on the truck.

Since I had the power supply out, I had to play with a box of LED lights I have waiting for projects. A minimum of three of them will be going on the 60. Lets just say I will never want for light. Never. My mom went about 300 feet away from the front lights, and could still easily read the lettering on the zipper of her jacket. I can't wait to see them on the front of the truck. I do live up in the mountains, and I often am driving to and from work at odd hours, and I've seen Mountain Sheep, Deer, Elk and once a Moose on the road. Light makes me happy.

That's all for now. It was a quick trip, but I need to get back to CO to help my sister install a wood stove, and then go back to work.

Maybe use what's left for a bone-stock restoration?

Maybe use what's left for a bone-stock restoration?

I'll leave that to Joe E and beno.

Once this 60 is done, it's either my 45, my wife's 4-runner, or maybe some work on the faux-lux.

Somewhere in there I need to build a house too. ;)

I had Dad take the IP down to Central Motive Power (the local ND injection shop) to get them to look at rebuilding it. Since it came from a mine truck I'm expecting to have to do a LOT of work to that IP to rebuild it. But I got it for a good enough price that I'm OK with that.

I'll let you know what the diesel shop says...

wood stove sounds fun i just installed a wood burning fireplace yesterday and gotta say nothing quiet like it. I'm enjoying the warmth and glow as I type this. Also on a side note I have an 88 fj62 in the drive I need to finish scraping before I haul it off so if you need any parts to get those windows working let me know there yours no charge. I'm following along on this build as I did with the others and also following in your footsteps. I have a 100% stock other than the H55f 87 fj60 awaiting a low mileage 12ht transplant that I've finally acquired the last pieces of the puzzle for ; hj60 frame mounts, air cleaner, flywheel, bell housing and clutch fork. I also got the hj60 throttle cable. The 62 parts truck came in more handy than I had initially expected because it has the properly orientated power steering lines, air cleaner intake in passenger fender and that handy hand throttle!

Yeah the wood stove is a hit! Took us about 2 hours to get it installed, and now my little sister can live in as much heat as she can stand! Good stuff!

Any idea how close you are to doing the swap? I am looking for FJ-60 PS cooler lines for this one (I used the 62 lines on the HJ-61, the 1HZ has the PS pump and reservoir on the left side, just like the FJ-60).

And do I spy a FF rear axle on the trailer there?????

That's a nice, clean looking 60 you've got there!

Dan

Thanks! I was fortunate to come across that 60 just minutes from my house and its as rust free as they come. To be honest I probably wont get around to doing the swap for a few more months im doing a bunch of work on my house, need to rock the fireplace and gut and remodel a bathroom next finish up Tucker's truck with a couple of minor tweaks and at a minimum get my bj40 torn down to the frame so I can have a nice blank canvas for the aluminum body and get all the junk parks hauled off to the scrapers. Good eye there! yep picked up a full floater from a fj45 but unfortunately it is not a late model with the parking brake like I desperately need for my 40 with the h55f. That picture with the 62 on a trailer was from a parts run I made last month I actually have a low mileage 3b from a 70 series stuffed in the back of the 100 in that picture as well which is what made it squat down like that in the rear.

So I acquired some goodies...

Yep. An auxiliary tank, from Australia originally.

On my way from the airport I stopped to see the shaman, and got a gasket...

I also stripped down the front axle. Planning on doing the work to rebuild that tomorrow...

And after all of that, I test fit another acquisition....

(If it's not clear, that an E-locked 3rd member from an FZJ-80). I clearanced both the front and rear axle housings just in case I want to put an E-locker in the front someday, but plans now are just for the rear.

I also have a 1HZ IP at the diesel shop, for rebuild. I stopped in to talk to them today also. It looked like a rusty boat anchor, but the insides are real nice actually.

Mostly today I drove the Blue-Jay 40 in to the diesel shop to drop off the boost compensator so they can use it on the IP.

Then I blasted and got ready for powder coat parts from the steering knuckles.

I also started cleaning up the axle housing, straightened the steering stops, and welded on some gussets to strengthen them in the future.

Last thing I did was count my third members. Of course to count the gears accurately I decided I needed to fabricate a 3rd member holder..,

Turns out I have more 4.11 gears than I know what to do with. I'd like to put 3.70 gears onto the E-locker carrier (I realize not many people do that, but 3.70 is great in the HJ-61, and Blue-Jay 40)--but I only have one loose 3.70 third in the shop. I have 5 4.11 thirds, apparently. And of course the 4.10 in the E-locked third.

I have to head to work tomorrow unfortunately, but hopefully at the end of the month I can get back to this.

Dan

I picked up my rebuilt 1HZ IP. (With the boost compensator installed and altitude compensator removed)

Rebuilt by Central Motive Power in Albuquerque, using a best guess for a turbocharged 1HZ. We looked up the injection specs for the factory 1HZ-T pump and that looks to be a more industrial engine tune. So we guessed.

We can adjust it once it's in.

I also picked up some bits from the Shaman to get the E-Locker into the rear axle housing, and to rebuild the front axle.

Dan

Can 3.73 fit with the locker? Not sure if the size of the gear would be an issue. Looking forward to how you set up the e-locker electronics, because I'll be doing the same thing.

I am told that it will.

Haven't tried it myself yet though.

EDIT--I should note that I am considering going 4.10 for the truck. If I can get the thirds cheap enough...

Dan, I have a set of 4.10s and am looking for the 3.73s. Let me know if you want 'em.

I have attached a scan on the fuel delivery schedule that we guessed at when we rebuilt the IP. Since I am not driving the truck anytime soon, it will be a while before I can report back on how well they work.

But just for safekeeping I am attaching them here.

Dan, I see your countrymen quoting 3.73.... can you please publish the tooth count from your fine 3rd member stand to let people check the actual ratio...

Funny.

Offline I have corrected a few.

Land cruisers use 3.70 ratios. 10 teeth on the Pinon, 37 teeth on the ring gear.

They also use 4.11 (9x37), and in the FJ-80 and later 4.10 (10x41).

But no 3.73. 3.70 for sure. At least not on the Cruisers I work on (40s, 60s and other pre-cup holder models).

Dan

As the numerical offender I stand corrected. I wonder where the extra 3 came into it as I see it often.

It"s an 11/41 tooth count (actually 3.72727 etc.... common over here in GM based vehicles of days gone by.... I suspect it's a common ratio over there as well in older GM road vehicles, just not in Toyota 60s/80s

Clearly, the Toyota 10x37 is superior to some silly GM 11x41. Toyota even sticks to round numbers for us, how considerate is that?
