We are starting to look for a newer car for Danise that has an automatic. Her injuries from the accident 2 years ago have made her right arm and shoulder not work as well as it used to and shifting the manual tranny in her Accord is difficult and painful. The logical choice is a ~4 years old Camry or Accord, to get something in the mid-teens. But while at a used lot, the sales guy showed her a 2003 330i. Danise loved it. I like what I hear about BMW related to the driving experience but don't have a clue about quality, dependability and reliability (QDR as Toyota refers to it). I drove it. It was nice. Lots of power. Seemed to handle well for the short distance I took it. We've had our '98 Accord for 10 years. It's only had some minor issues but it does burn more oil than I think it should, now with 130K miles. The mid-2000's Accord is very familiar, with just a newer look and controls. I think it might be slightly bigger. The same age Camry seems more like a Buick, with a more cushy ride and less attractive exterior. I haven't considered Nissan or Hyundai.

Coming from the Toyota world, you aren't going to be able to afford an European vehicle. Check out the Consumer Reports type sites to get a sense of the annual maint dollars to keep an European vehicle maintained like it needs to be maintained.

Toyotas should be taking a drastic plunge in resale value so you may be pick up a nice unit! Perhaps an Avalon or a Lexus is in your future?

I'm with Ash. I have a coworker who used to own a VW. She hated that car, mostly because it was costing her a fortune to maintain and fix. It wasn't that old. She finally traded it in and bought a Subaru, which was also a much better choice for her needs.

These are my immediate concerns, despite Danise liking it. I think I'm going to use the safety angle. Any relatively new Accord/Camry has side impact airbags and high ratings on crash tests. She doesn't care about maintenance costs. I'll be in the doghouse because of how often I'll be working on it instead of doing stuff with the family. And I can get one 5 years newer with a Certified warranty for the same price.

Is the previous generation Camry part of the recall? Danise can't drive the current generation because the headrest shoves her head forward and it's very uncomfortable. We tried adjusting it but it just wouldn't work because of the shape of the headrest and her short stature.

I'd really prefer to get a 4-cyl because of the increase fuel economy over the 6-cyl in the Avalon or Lexus. Plus, a ~4-year old version of either of these is still $5K - $10K above my price range.

I would recommend the Bimmer if you were going for something new. The BMW maintenance program is a really good deal, all maintenance is free for the first 4yrs/48k miles, that includes everything but tires, even wipes fluid and blades. BMW parts are expen$ive and they are not the easiest cars to work on, but if you want something around 4 years old at the same pedigree, might look at the Lexus IS.

Technically the maint is not free, it's added onto the purchase price of the vehicle. The dealers make a decent margin on folks not taking advantage of the "free" maint by not coming in regularly. :D I do agree though, a regularly maintained European vehicle is superb indeed. It's a mindset that one needs to fall into.

I could see myself having one as a second vehicle. I'm not sure it's the best choice for my wife's daily driver/family car. This one she looked at is a 2003 with 70K miles on it. That's the only reason I can afford it. I looked at ads for mid 2000's Lexus GS and ES and all are out of my price range. The IS would be too small for a family car that I expect to keep for another 10 years, when my kids will be bigger. Even the GS might not be the best choice. I've sat in the back seat of a 2004 model and there wasn't enough headroom.

For what it's worth... I have an '06 Corolla, and I love it. It's a 4 cylinder, gets GREAT gas mileage, feels zippy, and is fun to drive. And I was a truck girl. But I've grown to love it. Course, I have not sat in the back seat, so it may be to small for growing kids.

I have an 06 Audi A3 with 60K miles that is great to drive but it has had a few "quirks" that piss me off. The most recent "quirk" to the tune of $525. When I asked about a very small piece of plastic that broke and the guy said $750, I walked out and told my wife I was gonna sell it.

I'm looking to sell it and get a Tacoma. The Taco has the same engine as my 04 4Runner. The Runner has 100K miles and all I do is change fluids, tires, and put gas in it. Still runs like the day I bought it.

I'm hoping to get in on Toy Hysteria. Funny thing is the Taco's get great reviews and dealers aren't giving the rebates on them like other cars in the family.

BMW is going to cost you way more than a Japanese car. Call Sandia BMW and ask how much for some regular maintenance items, either parts or service. I think you will find that its very spendy...
Im in agreement with alot above, ride the Toyota hysteria!!

What about a Subaru Legacy? Nice, but not overpriced. They come with a 4 cylinder boxer engine and many come turbo charged as well. Also they are all wheel drive, which makes them fun to drive and really safe. Some days I miss my Outback, but by no means do I mean driving a 40. :D Best of luck finding a new car. I say Subaru or a Toyota.

I don't think Subarus get nearly as good gas mileage as a comparable Toyota. I have an 04 Corolla with 150k miles and it's been a great car. It's had a couple minor problems but nothing expensive. There is a chance you will get a reliable German car, but it's not a good chance...

I looked at used 00 to 03 Corollas for my daughter and some of them were in excellent condition with low miles and perfect bodies. I'm sure the same applies to Camrys, and Accords for that matter.

Consumer Reports dude.

Consumer Reports? That stuff costs money.

That's too much work. I'd rather be lazy and not do any homework and then be an uninformed consumer.

In that case I'd buy the extended warranty. Consumer reports is waay cheaper.

Even the extended warranties on BMWs are expensive.

Since the rates vary by predicted reliability, I'd say that is a true statement.

Which brings to mind an aha! moment. Reviewing extended warranty rates might be an excellent way to buy a used car...

I've had euro cars almost all my life. Audi (2003 A4, new), Volvo (2004 XC70, new), BMW (many moons ago 2002) and Saabs (many...up to 1999 9-5 wagon and '99 9-3) . After the sex appeal wore off all of them (Ok...the Vulva XC70 wasn't so sexy I guess) the mechanical and electrical issues with ALL of them made me long for Japanese turn the key and go reliability.

I'm not one that says "never" easily. But I can almost assure you I/we will NEVER own or lease another euro car unless I was so fortunate to be able to own two...one to drive the other to have at the mechanic getting fixed and swap when (notice I said "when" not "if") needed. And of course a bank full of money to keep them both rolling and dependable.

Euro cars are NOT for the faint of heart nor pocketbook based upon my and other's I know experiences!

Zero regrets about having 3-Toyotas in the garage!
