Which oil are you using?

A high-quality dino with about 1800 ppm zddp. And cheap.

Any real racing oil has loads of ZDDP. That's the point of a racing oil, to protect flat tappet engines running 100's of lbs of valve spring pressure at 7000RPM.

BUT, racing oils are designed to be run for a weekend, then drained. They are not designed to sit, protect on cold starts, hold dirt in suspension for months, etc.

But is the 'racing oil' you get at O'Reilly's really the same stuff that they use in NASCAR and elsewhere?

Also, maybe a 500 mile race is about the same in terms of oil as 5000 miles in a street car that's driven a wee bit less aggressively?

I dunno.

Well, in So. Cal I run 15w40 year round. 10w-40 would be fine, too. I don't think a multi-viscosity 50wt is necessary, but some people like to run that.

So Jim, What are you running in 2Fs?
Mine or customer's?

Mine: whatever cheap-a$$ 15W40 diesel oil was on sale at Tractor supply about 3 years ago.

Customers: Chevron 15W40 oil that was on sale at Oreilly's last month. And a bottle of additive if it is a new engine.

I read on here somewhere that Wal-Mart was carrying SF rated oil. Low and behold it was on the shelf Accent brand, 10 - 40w "for use in car made before 1988.". $2.57 a quart. Don't know much else about it

Well after reading many pages I have come to the conclusion that the Mobil 1 15W50 should be the best???

There is no "best" but it will be very very good.

Got curious and found that Chevron shows the non Low Emission Delo 400 on their page. So I started calling the local truck/tractor parts places. I've yet to make contact with the most likely business to have pre CJ spec Delo 400 (my works hrs vs. their business hrs don't jive well), but I also called vendors for other brands and found their last 15 gallons (in 5 gal. buckets) of Non-LE Rotella for less than $17/gal. Beats the chain store prices here locally.

So, my suggestion is quit trying to find earlier spec oil at the normal parts stores and go find your local bulk oil/fuel vendors. Some of them will stock the oil that we're interested in for these older engines. You'll just have to buy it in larger volumes than 1 gal. at a time.

For those with access to it the latest TDR magazine (issue #76) has a pretty informative article on CI vs. CJ oils. I've been eagerly awaiting the issue since I read that it would have this article. After reading it I'll be buying Rotella 15W40.

Thought you were gonna run Rotella based on the unobtanium article ?

Seven quarts of Rotella 15W40 plus one qt of Rislone zinc additive is what I've started using. I guess this will supply the additional zinc needed plus the Rislone is readily available at Advance Auto Parts.

Cut-n-pasted from my post in the 80 FAQ Oil Thread:

While browsing the shelves at a local discount auto parts store I noticed that Castrol is now marketing a US-spec 5W-50 touting the benefit of increased ZDDP for older (design) engines:

Castrol USA - EDGE 5W-50 with SYNTEC<br>Power Technology

I also recently discovered that M1 5W-50 is available in the US from limited distributors (i.e., online for most of us). Unlike some of the lighter M1 offerings it has a nice HTHS spec.

Mobil 1 5W-50, M1 5W-40 TD & this new Castrol 5W-50 have HTHS numbers of 4.4, 3.8 & 3.7 respectively.

Oops. Don't know how I managed that! XD

---"Wait Master, it might be dangerous.....You go first."--

Saw the Castrol 5W-50 w/ZDDP at autozone.
The Mobil1 5W-50 is available online; might be worth calling your local distributor to save on shipping.
M1 5W-40 Turbo Diesel @ most Wally Worlds.
