Which oil are you using? (1 Viewer)

I've been making my own blend lately. Ige changes the oil on her FZJ80 pretty often, I keep her old (synthetic) oil in gallon jugs. When my Rotella dino gets low, I top it off with the used synthetic...
I keep the jugs full, the bad stuff sinks to the bottom over time, I use the stuff off the top.

I will going forward. Up until now I've had some SL rated 15W40 stashed away, but that's about gone.

Bringing you back into this Jim:

You gave a great talk at CMCC this year and part of it was about oils... I'd like to pin you down for your recommendation for an oil and or oil/additive package for 100,000-150,000 mile 2F motors.

Castrol GTX. I bought my rig from the original owner who provided me with a HUGE service history. He said he only used Castrol GTX oil, so that's all I've used for the past 20 years.

The problem is that Castrol GTX (and almost all other oils) have changed alot in 20 years. What used to be fine, may no longer be fine. This thread is not about what used to work, but rather what should we use going forward in a low zddp additive world.

Well put Doug.

For a mid-life 2F my recommendation is cheap 15W40 diesel oil and a small bottle of Zinc additive.
Use the big Wix filter.
Change once a year or 5000miles.
Oil brands don't matter much, since they are all rated CJ or SN.

There are good oils that have plenty of cam protection, but they cost money and may not be in stock at FLAPS.

Oh... and is a large Toyota brand filter a good choice? I assume the WIX is assuming one doesn't have access to the large Toyota filters....

15600-41010 is a decent Jap filter.

Too bad it is now discontinued.

CDan, IIRC, has about 60 left.

Wix would be my next choice since it is readily available.

I'm seeing that they have been replaced by: 90915-YZZD3... is this NOT a good choice? It LOOKS like a large body filter but I don't know if it is "as good" as the 15600-41010.

I run the K&N spin on filter, HP-3001, which is the same approximate size as the larger OEM filters. About $11 at my local Baxter's.

I think I found a source for old formula Delo 400 15w40. The ratings look good (SJ and SL) and the specs were good for zinc.

Whatcha think?

I don't run the -YZZD3. Made in Thailand. Not interested.

I still have about 20 -41010's so I guess when they run out I will switch to the WIX1515.

I've been looking around or pricing. And Autozone has the best price for the Rotella 15w-40.

$3.50 a quart if you buy the 2.5 gallon bottle.

Have Autozone pricematch to Walmart, $12.97 / gal for the Rotella 15w-40, $3.24 / qt.

Running a turbo 3B, I didn't think I had much to add until I see people using Wix 51515 filter. I didn't know that fit a 2F.

A compatible part number is the Wix 51773 filter which is much larger (if its already been mentioned, my apologies). That's what I use along with Rotella 15W-40. I make my annual 5 gallon purchase of Rotella at Autozone for $70 ($3.50/ quart). And that filter/engine combo holds about 7 quarts of oil!

I recently did an oil change and went with the Valvoline Premium Blue 15w40. My 2f with about 180k on it seems to like it. Leaks are pretty much non-existent now but will need to do oilpan and rear main seal.

That DELO 400 15w-40 Mulitgrade is perfect for your 2F. I'd run it if I could find it, but it's pretty much zero availability in Kalifornia. Where do you buy it? Trucking/Fleet supply ?

Wal-Mart seems to always have it, at least the one by my house.
