Which jack stands should I buy?

how much more do you need 6000 pounds. Craftsman Professional 3 ton High Lift Jack Stands.

That's the set I have (two pair). I went out and double checked, and they're rated at 3 tons per pair, so a set of four should handle 12K lbs (6 tons).

Are 3 ton jacks safe?

After reading everyone's posts it sounds like everyone is saying that 3 ton jack stands are unsafe for LandCruiser use. These CAN be used safely as a pair correct? Craftsman is selling a 3-ton combo pack with service jack, the stands and a creeper for $110. If these are always used in the garage and on level ground is there really that big of a risk? I'll drop the extra money if needed for safety, but hoping I don't need to.

Also, both of these only reach a height of 19.25inches. Is this high enough to let the suspension drop on a stock LC is 33s? and one with a 3" lift with 33s?

Thanks

I used to use 3 ton jack stands. I haven't touched them after reading this thread (and a few others).

I would use 6 ton jack stands minimum. Better safe than dead.

Same here. I'll keep the 3tons for the wife's Celica and for axle work I do in the future, but I'm definitely going to invest in a set of tall 6ton jacks for the 62.

I don't know about safety, but the 3 tons aren't really tall enough with a lift and bigger tires IMO. If there is a safety issue, spring for the bigger ones cause it's not worth the risk.

That too. I actually found the 12 ton Torins on Northern Tool's site and plan on ordering myself two pairs. Max 28" height is considerably taller than the 3 ton stands I have.

Some of the crappy jack stand do not have a good ratchet or locking mechanism for the height adjustment and the ability to lock the jack at a certain height. This locking mechanism and the weight rating are probably two of the three things I look for, plus the height.

still use my OTC/napa 15 years latter

Make that seventeen years. my has time rolled by. Still does the job.

If you want the best in jacks, go OTC or Milwaukee jacks

I like the esco jacks. Where are they made? I really think the esco would be good to use on blacktop, that often would allow other jacks to sink into it on a hot summer day and damage the pavment. But otherwise, has a good footprint and damage free rubber page to prevent undercoating removal.

Now only if there was such thing as a portable car lift that can be moved and used on top of the pavement anywhere I want to use it.

Thanks for this thread. Timely - I'm about to do a front axel job, and I had some of the 3T HF units (hey, $12 with a coupon. What could possibly go wrong?!?)

I just bought the Torin 6T's. Only $47 from Amazon... and since I have prime, they have to ship those suckers 2-day air. Heh.

I ended up going with the US Jack 6T stands. I bought one set way back in 2011 or so, and then I bought another set a couple of years ago. I noticed, beside the price being astronomically higher now, that they used to be rated per stand, now they are rated per pair. The newer stands look the same as the old stands, not sure why the change in rating. I should probably call US Jack and find out.

At any rate, these are really great jack stands and I have, and continue to make good use of them on our many (heavy) cruisers over the years on a regular basis.

I appreciate the follow up. The US Jack 6T stands are on my short list of stands to buy for use on my uzj100 and tundra.
