I dont know if this should go here or in "Tools" forum but I am looking for an air compressor to put in my garage that will run a grinder, sprayer etc so I can sand down, prep and paint my FJ.

Dont want to break the bank but want something that will run the tools I need to get the job done.

Thanks.

I seem to be finding a fair amount of Ingersol Rand T30's in my local CL as of late. See if you can find a similar one in your neck of the woods. My philosophy when it comes to air compressors is that if you can move it, it ain't a real compressor. :-) Buy a good quality used unit that your grand kids will inherit!

some examples:

I have one similar to this, great unit, made in USA

In case you noticed, these are belt driven units and tend to be longer lasting and quieter. There's nothing worse than going deaf in your garage while you're trying to work or carry on a conversation while the compressor operates. Higher quality units like IR, Quincy Speedaire and others have rebuild-able pumps. Just like your 40, these things can be rebuilt when they wear out. Belt driven units run slower and tends to be quieter as a rule.

I have a belt driven 5 hp CH 26 gallon and a non belt driven stand up 30 gallong CH unit that I just inherited from my grandpa(not very old).

The belt driven unit is by far nicer to be around due to noise and it pushes the DA and grinder much better than the stand up CH unit. Both are rated fine for a spray gun. But those DAs and Grinders take a LOT of air.

For grinding and cutting, I now stay with the electric angle grinder. It is a much better option.

I have a 35 gallon IR that is belt driven and it seems to run the DA or any impact just fine. I painted my 88 with it and it worked fine.

Hope that helps...
