I recall seeing a rear storage shelf, going by memory it mounted to the rear grab handles.

It was quite shallow but it looked like a great spot to throw an extra jacket and some other light items.

Check with @LandCruiserPhil I think he is in the final stages of making a kit.

I bought one of @LandCruiserPhil Beta run and it is awesome. I will need to paint it when the weather is better but so far It is very useful. I still need to post pics!

'Attic rack" you can search it for figure out how to make your own if need be. It's simple.

Looking at your sig you have an 80 seriesand yes very simple Attic racks made cheap and easy - 80 series
The 100 no so straight forward if safety, mount quality, and looks are important. Using a full 24x48 grid you will present a hazard for 2nd row people head. The 100 series is also wider making it not stupid simple like an 80. Also there are 3 different handle configuration for the 100 series:(

good to know. I thought from some of the threads I was reading before made it sound the same.

How have folks with the 98-02 been mounting a rack there?

I'd love to have something up there, but after seeing the right side handle I'm stumped...

I love mine but it wasn't easy to build.

Here's a pic of mine that I made a year ago (I know I know, I've posted it more than a few times but this topic keeps coming up). @jcardona1 did this mod to his 80 series so I decided to take a few tips from him to build one for my 100. It has served me well and I use it almost on a daily basis. It's an efficient way to keep tools and equipment out of the way while not limiting driver visibility out of the rear. The missing bolts in the hinges have since been added, this is just old pic I took right after I installed it. Total cost excluding tools mounted on the rack was less than $100.

Where are you guys getting the metal mesh? Before I decided on using webbing for mine, I tried to source metal mesh and couldn't find it anywhere. Only idea I could come up with was to buy an old dog crate and cut it up.

We use 24x48 1/4" 3x3 grid wall for store displays anything lighter will bend when loaded

If passenger head safety is important dont use the full 24" depth:bang:
Why is that? I realize if the edge protruded past the 2nd row headrests that would pose a problem for taller passengers sitting there, but mine actually comes up a few inches short.

my second row seats recline causing a problem

You can use the full 2x4' grid if you cut off the two rear corners to allow the whole panel to sit a few inches farther back towards the hatch. It's the only part of the grid panel that interferes with the pillars that causes the panel to sit too far forward. By trimming and removing the two back corner squares of the grid panel, my whole panel sits back far enough that (even with seats fully reclined) I was able to add another vertical panel as a cargo barrier and it comes straight down from the edge of the horizontal panel behind the 2nd row headrests.
