I’m looking for Dolby Atmos and 4K. if you have one of those in a vintage component, sure! ;)

I have other vintage stuff, a couple other two channel systems. This is for my main home theater

I just read through the documentation for this receiver. Turns out it is bi amp capable. I do have to wonder if that will make any difference considering all 7 channels are sharing the power anyway.

Yeah - so that's what's getting on my tits. The whole "with 2 channels driven" wattage thing. That receiver you posted says 105w x 9...... Well, the reality is it's 105x2 - split over 9 channels. so effectively 23 wpc....

My new Denon is 95 x 7.... but same deal, measured with 2 channels driven so effectively 25 wpc...

I bi-amped the front mains, which changes my outdoor speaker plans, but it's given the system enough extra power to make me happy. My Litmus test is the opening scene to The Dark Knight. The explosions and gunfire in that scene really test the limits. Watched it again with the bi-amp setup. My ears didn't bleed, but it's closer to where the old system was and it was an open box from Crutchfield ($350) so it's hard to really be disappointed at that price range.

Since this receiver doesn't have a pre-amp out, I grabbed an HDMI to rca adapter, and a small 2 channel class D amp for the outdoor setup. With speakers, amp and adapter it was under $250.

Who can suggest a good high power home theater receiver. My 10 yr old 7.1 Pioneer just died. Got a Denon and although the features are neat it’s severely lacking in power compared to the Pioneer. Pioneer was rated at something like 90wpc (rms 20-20k 0.08%THD not some BS) but with all 7 channels driven.
new one is 95wpc (same non BS) but with only 2 channels driven.
No preamp outs other than the sub (thought about bi-amping the mains...)

Don’t wanna break the bank, but I can’t find anything for less than about a grand that has any decent power output.
This Denon is going back
I have not been impressed with the latest Denon offerings. They moved to a simplified architecture and appeared to have cut corners in several areas, possibly the amplifier. Way back in the day, I hooked up a bunch of Sony receivers for a dance studio. Later on, the dance studio opened another room and I picked up a Yamaha receiver. The Yamaha was a little more expensive but the power and sound quality was leaps and bounds better than the Sonys.

So my main left and right speakers are Bi-amp Capable. So I sacrificed the additional two channels that were going to be used for outdoor to run the main speakers. With the bi amplification on the mains, it’s made a huge difference.

Yeah of course that means I had to buy a second two channel amp to run zone 2 - But basically for about 100 bucks I found a class D 2 channel to run zone 2. The equivalent 9.1 receiver that would’ve allowed me to continue to biamp and run zone 2 would have been another $300

finished recapping the pioneer and my setup is back up.

dual 701
pioneer sx-626
parks puffin phono
klipsch klf-30s

wanted a period specific setup and this one sounds great.

Just finished hooking up a small 2 channel micro class D to a couple of small outdoor yamaha speakers and debuted it with a rum and Coke and Stevies Ribbon in the sky. Apart from the obvious lack of anything below about 65hz and the slightly tinny sound of metal tweeters I’m actually quite impressed. $160 for speakers and the 2 Channel amp. It’s made by “Fosi Audio”

Due to our move, I opened up my boxes of CDs and started ripping them to a 1 TB SSD. Now I am hunting stores for used CDs of course :) Love the $1 CD finds.

With SSD storage coming down, easy to rip in .wav and have full lossless format. Sounds really good on Roon with a decent DAC (using a Dragonfly Cobalt atm).

@nutop 's old Pioneer SX-626 is a recap done right - really been enjoying it! I think classic Pioneer receivers are underappreciated because almost everyone had one in the 70s.

Edit: 1 TB SSD I picked up for music storage - holds about 90K songs:

Hey Jamie, as a enterprise class storage administrator, I would highly recommend you duplicate or triplicate your song collection to other devices for backup purposes.

Thanks Jonathan - I dump the whole "artist" folder into a separate HDD on my DT from time to time, but are you suggesting off-site back up managed by a professional storage administrator?

:)

LOL. I've lost too many disks from failures over the years and learned my lesson.

I've got a 4TB Western Digital external harddrive as our tertiary backup. It's our grab and go storage in the event of a house fire.

I have a analog only Integrated amp now and would like a component DAC or CD with DAC with USB inputs, but am struggling to find the right thing.

Too much money:

Question the DAC on this and still more $$ than I want to spend:

Supposedly great, but question the functionality for the price:

Edit - This is what I have and will just use for a while as it seems pretty good to me and usable on my phone and anywhere a USB is available with music output:

The office/listening room/gallery room started this week. Looking forward to getting the new system in there. @nutop 's old Sansui AU-4400 will get the shop by itself then :)
