When to replace Ignition coils. (2 Viewers)

My first one went bad around 220K, second around 230K. In both cases, it took a while for the CEL to come on, I was hours from home and replaced in the Advance Auto parking lot with their cheapo coils. I went ahead and replaced all 8 with the Rock Auto Densos and did the plugs when I did the timing belt at 240K.
 
The Rock Auto Denso, are they the same as the OEM Denso's from Dealer?
I ask because I've had some issues with Rock Auto suppliers, and Rock Auto just refers me back to suppliers.

The Rock Auto Denso's are Denso part #: 673-1303. The OEM coils I replaced are Toyota part #: 90919-02230. According to toyotaonlineparts.com, 90919-02230 has been replaced with part #: 90080-19027.

The OEM coils are slightly taller, but from the borrowed eBay image at the bottom, 90080-19027 appears to be the same height as the Rock Auto Denso. Strangely, the Rock Auto Denso's appear to have the Toyota part # ground off of them.

The Denso coils and plugs shipped separate from the rest of my order and were packaged individually in Denso boxes...as if they shipped directly from Denso. From what I can tell, they are identical to OEM.

Interesting.

Side by sides are different, Denso may have alter the newer ones over the years (short top). The parts # stamp could just be do to Toyota marking requirements.

We need to match with a current OEM from Dealer. Maybe someone could post a picture of one?
 
just replaced all 8 of mine with the 1303s. I had a misfire code on #1, 3 & 4 cylinders. Haven't driven it yet but appeared to be idling much smoother after install.
 
When two of my original coil packs failed, I replaced all 8 with the $80 pack on amazon. One of them failed already, within two months and under 1000 miles.

Now I get to see how to return stuff to amazon.

Glad I kept the originals :)

Seller sent another one out pretty quick.

At three months, 1500 miles, another $10 amazon coil pack bit the dust.
 
Heads up...Just got a set of 8 densos from amazon on sale @ $56.78 a pop
 
Just had my number 5 fail at 127K. Had the dealership replace it ($314 out the door). The truck was vibrating pretty badly, which made me initially think it was something more serious. I fell that the truck runs much more smoothly now. Going to pick up an extra Denso to have on hand.
 
Had coil #7 fail at 235K - third one I've replaced since owning the truck for about 10 years now... I picked up a used set of 7 off Mud classifieds (cheap long ago) from someone that had one go bad in their LX-470 and had dealership replace all of them. Always nice to have spares sitting around the garage... Took me 5 minutes for something the dealership would've charged several hundred bucks for like guy above... Super easy one banana job... :banana:
 
#7 failed for me at 119k, first one for me

Quoting myself... but just wanted to add I had 72K miles on my LX when this happened. Seems to be all better now.
 
@ChuckB, that's really low miles for an 04 with 72k to have 3 coils fail. Did you check your spark plug's gap? Now that you've driven for awhile have you noticed anything else like "D" vibration, MPG, pep, etc.?

I'm looking for a shop with the proper equipment (scope) to test the health of my LX & LC coils at a reasonable price. Your set would make for and interesting comparison in the test. If you still have your old coils I'd be very interested in them, PM me.
 
For those that carry a spare coil pack......do you also carry a code reader or assume you will stop at an auto parts store and borrow theirs? If you carry a code reader, what do you carry? Most difficult part of knowing you need to replace one on the road would be figuring out which one went bad.
 
You can get a Scan Gauge II and connect it to your OBD port under the dash and monitor engine and fuel economy plus have a built-in code reader.
 
Noticed this the other day. Truck had a very slight miss no CEL. Not sure if it was the culprit or not. I changed plugs, put a new coil on, fuel filter and all is good now. 155k looks original.

"coil" is that a Denso coil, how'd you know which one to change?
