When searching, no lockers no buy ? (1 Viewer)

I've got the center diff lock and am happy with it though I've never been in a situation that needed them. I'd be happier with selectable lockers though I'd be afraid that having them might make me get into situations that are beyond my driving skill.

kalawag - where do you live? Been meaning to ask. based on a couple pics of your 80 and descriptions on various posts, I'd guess outside the US, but am not sure.

I agree to an extent that lockers can get you in more trouble that you could handle. Sometimes they'll get you out of trouble...some times not...

Handy to have on some of the tougher trails.

Lockers. However, I think as these trucks get older and rack up the miles, finding one w/ low(er) mileage and in good condition will start to catch and eventually pass the locker option in importance.

I thought you were going to say"... proceeded to the back room to bend over...". Sorry, couldn't resist. ;)

Maybe instead of asking for the rotary knob, people can ask the dealer/seller to read the axle(sp) code from the doorjam sticker and tell him/her that you are not intersted w/o telling which code/number you were looking for instead.

That would leave them puzzled, at least for awhile, until they find out.

Yea. I think people are starting to catch on. The new feature on Ebay allows people to see the questions that are asked of the seller. 8 out of 10 questions on the 80 series LC's I've seen for sale are always, "Does this vehicle have the optional locking differentials?"

Sometimes dealers are advertising it right in the description line.

The best thing is to find an owner who doesn't really know what lockers are - like I did. I bought my rig from an attorney. He told me that he thought the rotary switch was a traction aiding device (a correct statement) and then proceeded to tell me that he only used it once on a long trip home when he got caught in a snow storm. He thought he was going to get stuck so he turned the switch on just in case. He said, "the lights flash to tell you they are working and remind you that they are on". Ugggg.....Flashing....Right. Obviously he engaged them while driving in 4H, so they never engaged.

Depends on if you are wheeling with them locked or wheeling open then when you get stuck lock them in. That works sometimes, but many times once you're stuck it's over, better to give it a good shot with the lockers on in the first place. Oh and definetly lockers can get you stuck but damn, it's alot more impressive to be throwing mud from all 4 tires while you're so burried it takes two winches to get you out.. :D So not only do they get you stuck, they get you REALLY stuck.. :D

^not buyin.............

Lockers are a must Rick. I was in Brekenridge over Thanksgiving and I really appreciated having both front and rear lockers. Also, the last snow run our club was on had an 80 with both lockers engaged blazing the trail.

they just don't drive the same as a 80

Price was already agreed upon within 10 minutes of my arrival. :D
No bending over for the 2nd one...I grabbed enough ankle when I got the first LX ;p

Asking the salesmonkey to get you the right code from the door sticker is just expecting way too much.

Dammit. I kinda have to agree with Eric on this one.. there are a lot of ***ing idiots out there, who all they see is SUV.

some times you're a lot better off just going in, play the game, get out. They don't need to all learn about lockers from you, don't teach them anything about springs either. Knowledge is for the blessed, and the blessed do their time on ih8mud... :)

I feel emasculated! (shameful look)

My Cruiser does not have lockers (wish it did) but for the way we use it I probably don't really need them.

Do try to find one with lockers for all of the reasons already listed...but be aware that they are not exactly sitting on every street corner.

I would put most of my effort into finding a well maintained Cruiser first and foremost.

Damn....I wish I had lockers!
