I need expert advice for a 40 series

I receintly purchased an '81 40 series LC. I'm gonna keep the suspension stock but want to run a taller tire, not too fat. I have a set of stock 16 inch rims. Whats the largest tire you recomend?

DAMN! I need pix of this new rig. You got the bug pretty good. 1st the LV, now a BJ44! Did you find this one in Japan? Also is there any news/updates on the LV? If you are still in Japan, see if you can get some Symex tires for that new rig. I am not sure if they sell them there, but I know they don't here in the U.S.

Simex tyres are made in Malaysia and thus used in events such as the Malaysian Rainforest Challenge.

They are a superb tyre on must surfaces but particularly good in mud and dirt. They are also generally available in a taller, skinnier profile (33x9.4, 34x10.5 etc).

I run the Jungle Trekker IIs which are a great tyre when aired down quite low (15psi is great on my FJ73). They are a heavy carcass thus requiring a lower pressure for grip and soaking up high bumps.

The directional Extreme Trekker II is also a great tyre.

However both tyres have a great hum at speeds of 25mph + and will generally do a good job of drowning out any stereo!

Their tread pattern also doesn't lend itself to longevity so consider them for a weekend driving option.

Cheers

Re: 15" wheels. I just got some 33x9.5's on my 76 project which currently has stock suspension (I am getting an OME 2" lift soon) and they do fit. They might be kind of tight when rock crawling but seem to be fine on the road. Look great. Thanks to "IDAVE" for the tip.

I can tell you 33x12.50's will NOT clear uncut rear wheelwell lips without a lift. I'm running 2.5" lift springs with 3" over stock shackles and that's just adequate. Without the shackles they would rub when cornering hard. They really needed a 4" lift spring.

The below photo is 33x12.50's with 2.5" lift springs only.

Every 33x10.50 I see is running at least a 2.5" lift spring or an extended shackle, though I don't know the length.

If the body and suspension is stock you can not run 33s

When I bought my cruiser all it had was 3in extended shackles which are about as long as you can get and it barely cleared 31s..

there's quite a few people on here that are running 33x9.50's with no lift.
i'll not list them, but most have posted pics of their rides a few times.

I was running 33x9.50R15 on stock rims on my '82, with tired original springs and shackles.

On the road, they were fine, but I did get a little rub on speedbumps and on dirt roads.

Not a trailable setup, IMHO.

I agree, they work fine on the street, they will rub off road.

My 33x9.5 on stock lift haven't rubbed at all. No trims, no cuts, no bruises.

It's worth noting that the BFG MTs in 9.5 are actually slightly wider than the BFG ATs.

31's, depending on the condition that your suspension is in, mine has the typical saggy back end, and I needed longer shackles at the back.

I have 33 X 12.50s on 8 inch rims and stock springs except for 2 inch longer shackles in the rear only. Does not rub at all on the road and only very minor off road. My springs must be pretty good. Truck only has 60K on it.

Outstanding advice -

OK, now how do I convert a 31" or 33" tire size to a metric reading? Whats a 33 9.50 in euro talk
