What’s the best way to lift a pig?

for my trail pig the best lift was an SOA, i did my homework prior, did all the work myself and ended up with what i feel to be a very well balanced drivetrain.
on my 76 pig which will be DD, family camping i think stock suspension and 31's will fit the bill, i only plan a mild lift or helper leaf in the back for carrying a camping load.

Im starting a bit late on this thread... but here goes.

My old DD 1974 FJ55 had 33x12.50x15's on it without a lift and they rubed when I tried to climb up a road curb. I think if you put 33"S on there with no lift it would be ok on the street but not so sure on the trail. I would go with at least a 2.5 to 3 inch lift.

I have yet to go to an SOA. But I have thought about it several times over the years. Take it over to Lance at IronPigs and ask him how he set his up. I think he had an awesome setup.

ahh.... got to run.. wife and kids want to go trick or treating now... dont have time... one of the other guys can finish for me about Lance and the rocklobster.

We put on the 4" safari lift from man-a-fre, and i think it rides great. Of coarse, compared to stock anything was a major improvement. Was also trying to stay on some kind of a budget, but that went out the window soon afterward.

I mean no offense, but I dissagree. The MAF springs that came with my truck haven't been anything but a PITA for me and the PO; when I s***can the remaining front springs, it'll be a glorious day.

Case in point for spring quality, I'm sure a few of you have inverted spring before. I did it a few times on my other 55- 2.5" Alcans, rear 55 shackles on the front. The spring was always fine after it was put right. The MAF springs on my current 55 sagged enough to where my PO of this truck added an add-a-leaf all the way around to keep them from sagging more. This past winter I inverted a front spring- also with rear 55 shackles, and it bent the mainleaf pretty damn well. I'm waiting for it to break.

As for factory springs, I think the 55 setup is pretty cushy with cleaned up springs. I took two sets apart, cleaned them up, ground all ridges, painted them, slip plated them, mixed and matched. They gave my other 55 a new lease on life, and a soft cushy ride that my MAF springs can't match- almost the same height too.

In my not always humble estimation, MAF can take their springs and....

Brian... LOL!

Do you remember my experience with MAF and their Reverse Shackle kit on my old 55? I am truly not impressed with MAF. I normally buy things from SOR. I have recived much better customer service from SOR. MAF never made right the mistakes they made with our kit. I ended up adapting and overcoming the flaws.

I'm actually going SOA/4 Link... SOA REAL soon/]QUOTE]

elaborate?? keeping the leaves and putting in 4 link?

Yup, SOA front and 4 Link/Coils on the rear. Front I'm going to use the 55 Rear packs. I really like the idea of the height adjustability and flex from the 4 Link. I want a really low SOA...I"m not going wider so I don't want to get Too tall.

I also have the 4" Safari kit from Man-it-Ain't-Free, and I dig the firmness on road but it is stiff off road. I have not had any significant sag and my rig has been a daily driver/mild wheeler for several years. The springs do work better under load and have broken in a little but after saying all that I am also looking into different options for the next pig lift. Man-a-fre was very difficult to deal with at the time and kept screwing up my parts orders while my daily driver was on blocks for 3 solid months! Their complete kit came with several incorrect parts and they kept sending me the same incorrect parts. It was truly a nightmare. It took me a long time to do business with them again.

I have been leaning towards a SO but the voices in my head keep telling me to keep the rig clean and stock and screw with my trail rig instead. I am running 33x 12.5's with the 4" kit on the trail rig by the way and would not run 33's with much less of a lift, personally. I did some searching about those Beltons yesterday and still could not figure much out about them. They do seem to be manufactured in Asia/Indonesia but was not sure if they are available in Canada or Australia or ??? Found the Belton Group Website and it reminded me of Alcan's. It seemed like you may be able to custom order Belton springs to fit your need's but I am not certain.

Guyute-Keep me posted on the Canada trip. I have heard you mention that before and it may be something I could be interested in. I need more information yet...

i've got the alcans on my 60 and love them. i'm going soa on my piggie. i haven't heard a whole lot of good on the maf springs either. i think sor makes a slightly (1.5-2" spring), but don't know if they still do...it was a long time ago when i was looking at them and all i remember was they were $. know nothing about beltons.

the MAF springs lift 4" and clear 35's but take forever to break in and are a hard ride.... SOA on stock springs clears 36"'s and rides really nice... well worth the time and effort, the articulation is great as well.
