I’m always evaluating my truck toolkit, and the video below got me thinking more about it. Curious to hear from the community about what y’all carry. Pics encouraged!

I keep a tool roll in the car with some common hand tools. By no means a full mechanics set. Depending on the type of wheeling you do, it may take that. Lots of write-up on what potentially to take, but I'll take another angle on what I've actually needed to use on the trail. Most every time for friends rigs.

- Long tie-wraps
- Gaffers tape (or duck tape)
- Scissor
- Wire strippers and electrical tape
- Hammer
- Pliers
- Large crescent wrench
- Combination wrenches

I love this Step22 Pangolin tool roll. Spendy, but the value is there. Easy to chuck around, deploy, store, and keeps tools quiet.

One not-well-known issue with gaffers tape is that if it gets wet, even after already applied, it becomes useless. Will slip right off whatever it is stuck to.

Or at least the type we used to identify our ladders.. but it was a major brand at the time.

Here is a video from the forum FAQs that covers tools, parts, and recovery gear. The video is in post #4.

A better Q for mine would be… what’s NOT in my tool kit… :hillbilly:

Although I'm sure you meant that in a funny way, it's really a good question. What have the experienced pros on the board decided they really don't need. What do you no longer carry that you used to? Or is that a silly question!

True Gaffers tape does not come off with water ;)

Apologies if this has now turned into a tape thread.

Have a brand name? Gaffer power is what we used, and would come right off bumper mounted tools or our ladders if left in the rain. Otherwise the texture was great.

I can’t claim to be an experienced pro at anything but it has been my experience that slip joint pliers are not the right tool for 99.999% of any job.

Tools I don’t carry are the ones that don’t fit anything on my vehicle or camper. For instance, all my stuff is metric so I won’t carry SAE, it saves space for usable tools and cuts weight. Sure, they would be handy if I stop to help someone else but, just like my safety, my ability to repair is only a priority to me.

Unfortunately a bunch of aftermarket manufacturers for the 200 use standard hardware, so carrying a small collection of SAE tools is necessary for me.

I also carry slip joint pliers, although I didn't know they were called that until I just googled that. We just called them pliers. I also carry needle nose, and my favorite: knipex pliers.

Edit: I carry a crap ton more tools than the guy in the video, so he's got smaller and lighter going for him. With what I carry, I can do pretty much anything short of engine and transmission rebuilding, or anything that needs a hydraulic press.

Knipex are my favorite pliers followed NWS.

I hear ya on the slip joints. I grew up using them and did so until my first shop job where I was introduced to a plethora of other options. They are sorta ok at a lot but don’t excel at anything except rounding bolt heats or turning items at the grinding wheel into projectiles in my experience.

Good point! I may need to reassess carrying them. I can't actually remember the last time I needed them for anything. I kind of just carry them out of inertia. I like your point about being sort of ok at a lot of things but not excelling at any of them.

Pro-Gaff or TecNec Both widely used in the movie industry where I worked for over thirty years ;)

Add me to that list. I have only one set in a few sizes as they are spendy. Love them enough that I find myself taking them along in my travel set and then taking them out when I get home. Everything else I have duplicates for.

Hah, that's my source too. My brother is in the industry and he tosses me a couples rolls every blue moon. Love the stuff.

I keep the following in a small rubbermaid action packer for all but around town trips:
Leatherman multi tool
Small Metric socket Set - it's about 6x6x2" and has shallow and Deep metric sockets 10mm-18mm
1 Extra serpentine belt
Snatch Strap
2 Shackles
Snatch Block
Receiver Shackle
Zip Ties
Battery Jump Box
Misc NRS Tie down Straps
2lb Hammer
Pair of work gloves
Maybe a few other odds and ends that I forgot.

In the open storage compartment on the left of the tailgate I keep the following so it's always in the truck:
Winch Controller
Jumper Cables
Tire Gage

It's nice to always have the jumper cables and minimum winching supplies just in case.

I've always wondered what people carry in their open storage compartment in the tailgate. I'd really like to find a tool roll or hardcase box to fit additional tools in.

My listed Items just barely fit, and they tie in fine with the two straps in there. No noise or rattling to speak of. I'd imagine a canvas tool roll that was rolled losely then flattened MIGHT fit in there also.

Motorcycle tool rolls are made to fit in small spaces. They might be great for this space. Now that I say that, I think I'll try that out with one of the ones I have kicking around he garage from when I was into adventure bikes. I think I have my window screens and a spare t-shirt in that compartment at the moment.

I have one of these: Sport Tool Pouch – Motorcycle luggage, bags, saddlebag liners for BMW, Harley, Honda, Kawasaki, and Yahama bikes made in the USA and backed by Kathy's lifetime guarantee and warranty. - https://kathysmotorcyclebags.com/product/cordura-sport-tool-pouch/

And a couple of others.

Use Racer tape, will hold a body together at 200 mph in the rain.
