What type of hydraulic fitting is on the high pressure (input) side of the steering box? (2 Viewers)

Yeah you are correct. It’s worth mentioning that if you are doing a hydroboost brake setup, I had better performance with -8an lines on the high pressure sides:

On mine I left -6an on low pressure sides and then ran them thru this cooler before returning to reservoir:

I ran each low pressure thru its own cooler but if you want to share the cooler for both low pressure sides just be sure to put a check valve on the lines before you join them together.

A very noticeable difference for me, but I do have a cummins swap and the PS pump could have been limited from the 6an lines. Going to 8an w cooler made a big difference.

Hope this helps you and anyone else looking to tackle this in the future.

You are correct….

Thanks for the feedback. I got stuck on the fittings problem yesterday and plan to order them this afternoon, and maybe I can get the dog up and running by next weekend.

Get after it and good luck ….

thanks also. I do have a cooler but no hydroboost, I probably do need to do hydroboost as I'm not the biggest fan of brake performance now, on my FJ60 with 35's...

I know this an older thread, but information is still good to understand..regardless. I'm swapping over to a 80 series steering gear on my FJ60,
you shouldn't have to change anything to put an 80 box on your 60. they are the same fitting sizes.

I thought that too, but not the case in what I have experienced first hand.. I've removed the 60 steering gear from my truck and I've removed the adapter fittings from noted steering gear. I was going to install the fittings in the rebuilt 80 series gear and get the assembly re-installed...then two things occurred. (1) fitting from the high side on the 60 gear would not screw into the 80 gear...it might have gone one thread or so and then the feel was too rough and obvious something was up with the size or thread pitch. (2) low side fitting from the 60 gear would screw into the 80 gear but was very loose...not even close to being the right size, this fitting has a lot of lateral or side to side movement....so not close to the correct size. I don't know the reasons etc...just what I see first hand. I can't say yet what the fittings I've ordered do...as I've not received them yet, I'll post up on if I have issues with the fittings I ordered. The fittings I have from the 60 gear...have been in there a while and I think I did that when was messing around with the engine swap. I don't know if there is any variation in the 60 series steering gears...or potentially the fittings that were in the mix a few years ago. My truck is a 1986 version...which I doubt makes much difference.

Most likely installer error. It sounds like you are trying to put them in opposite of each other, or maybe your fittings are rusty/crossthreaded.
Pressure side is 16mm.
Return is 17mm.

I promise your steering box is not unique or special. They are all the same sizes, mini truck, IFS, 60, 70, 80, and 105 series boxes

when you take one fitting off the high side and walk that over to the same position on the new gear...its hard to screw that up, and then same for the other fitting. Then for the hell of it you try the fittings in the different holes etc. Well the proof will be when I get the new fittings. I paid attention to what came out from where etc..... I'm aware of what they are and I've paid attention to what came out where and I marked the high side hose with a tie strap, and then I removed the high side fitting and set it aside in one spot and then the low side fitting and sit it in another spot....after which I took the gear loose and all the way out. Then I simply took the new gear, and looking at it , just like it mounts in the truck and the experience is as I noted... I don't know the specific size of the fittings I have but I track to what they should be.... ...and I try and put either in any combination into the new 80 gear they dont' work.... I"m not saying it makes sense...its what is occurring. I could accept that one of the threads in the gear might be rough....and might need a tap or thread chaser to clean it up...I've not looked at that close to confirm, could be, I've not noticed any thread issues on the fittings I've removed as to specific damage. The other side is not even close which is not a case of screwing up the fittings...there are only two fittings in play and two ports. A little hard to screw that up twice. Does not sound right to me either....but reality is what it is. I'm surprised by the stupid of it as well. I'll go back to the shop tomorrow or the next day and see if I was smoking crack or dreaming as to fit... I only have two fittings , I have a box somewhere with a few extra fittings I bought years ago...but who the hell knows where that is now, and I agree it seems that what came out of the 60 box should simply plug into the 80 box. (to the extent I'm aware). If I'm the dumb@$$ I'll note that after I check it again. If I can verify the size of the threads on the two fittings I have..I 'll see what I can confim, if I have the right die.

new fittings showed up from PSC, and work in the 80 gear, I ordered from the other places above too, but stuff has not made it here so they will be spares if ever needed. Got them today from PSC and installed them this afternoon, and maybe I'll have time to install the new gear this Friday and hopefully no surprises or leaks. I don't know the issues with the old fittings as i described earlier. Short answer is the PSC parts work, no known issues so far with the new fittings.
