talking with Michael and Brian about fros and cons

You can talk to me about fros all you want to this weekend. You don't have to call them.

I would like to offer two alternate suggestions. First, why not let Kristen drive the 40 to school. If it is just basic transportation to & from school, the 40 is up to the task. Plus a trail worthy 40 is easier to add nerf protection to (insurance against the other high school drivers she will be parking with). A class mate of Katie's lightly T-boned the 80 in the parking lot. It was readily fixed by the body shop, but it was a pain. Second alternative, guessing what it would cost to modify the 40 per your needs as a daily driver; put the 40 into storage and buy Kristen a disposable vehicle. The disposable vehicle we now have for the older girls is an 11 year old Ford Explorer that we picked up for just over $3k. If it gets hit, it will probably be totaled and the insurance will pay out enough to get another. She will have airbags for daily driving and you will too (with the 100). When she pops off to college, it could the vehicle that she takes with her. Additionally, if anything happens to the disposable vehicle (such as getting hit or she does not take proper care of it), you won't have any attachment to it like you may with one of your Cruisers.

Good luck. Plus I am facing the same with Melissa in two years, and I don't know what the solution will be.

I'm with Larry...sort of.

The disposable vehicle would increase insurance by another driver AND another vehicle. I don't like that part. Nor do I like the part about putting the 40 in storage. Other than that a 12 yo Civic would fit the bill nicely...and cheaply.

I understand the logic of buying a throw away car. The problem is that then I wouldn't get to have fun with SORF. Who knows where I'll end up, but so far I like the idea of the 3FE, aftermarket AC and sound deadening.

I don't like the idea of winding my F to 5k rpms, but that might force the 3FE sooner than later!

Thanks for all the great ideas and insight!

Josh,
As I read the various ideas, the figures running through my head appeared to be larger than the total ownership cost (vehicle, insurance, storage) of a throw away vehicle. Plus we all seem to have too much 'stuff' for our storage space so storing the could be an excuse to rent a locker for the extra stuff and the 40. The 40 would be in drivable storage so it would be at the ready when desired.

Luckily, it boils down to Steen's preferences and he appears to have down selected to a few top choices. A man of action ...

I have looked for storage for the 40 in the past and other than some very generous offers from friends with garage space (which I'd feel guilty doing) it hasn't been easy finding something that didn't cost $100/mo plus in this area. Still a viable option but probably not where I'm headed at this point. Selling SORF has also been an option, but I haven't been able to pull the trigger on that, and at this point don't see that happening ever.

A man of action? My wife would call it a man of impulse :grinpimp:

I did search around for 3FE's and it looks like they would be pretty easy to find at a reasonable price. Rebuilt for $2500 down to $800 or so for something with 200k sitting in a garage or rust bucket somewhere. Add in $1k for AC and then some labor $$ or a heck of a lot of beer/food for people that know what they are doing and I'm all set!

Looking forward to taking JP's for a spin to see the difference... I see a drag race at aunt sues. We can race to the speed limit. I'll get there in well under a minute. :D

Steen, are you still running the original one barrel carb. on your F?

are we drag racing for pinks??? :D

I have a one barrel Rochester.

Don't think pinks runs on a strip long enough to get to speed limit :grinpimp:

Maybe I should try out one of Marshall's trick carbs with the AC first... not sure about linkage issues? I could always sell it when the 3FE swap happens?

... and lets not forget there is nothing that screams redneck more than lifting the hood of a 40 and finding a chebby or ford V8 starring back at you:flipoff2:

hey I resemble that remark :flipoff2:

but seriously the 3fe sounds hot(there is always the 2uz:D) Why would you have to dump another grand into a/c ? couldnt just use or refresh the oem unit?
