what kind of paint to use?

i have done most of build on my rig (Nulla) but painting and body work i will definitely source out. i have been stopping by many body and paint shop in Los Angeles and the estimate i am getting are between 1,800 to 6,000 dollars to paint inside and out. they also talk about many different kinds of paint each one claiming that will be the best paint for my rig. so i figure i should get your opinion.

right now we are thinking of painting it red or blue or mustard yellow or .... not glossy almost flat, but not flat. we are not painting the aluminum box/camper in the back.

so the question is what kind of paint to use for a rig that will see a lot of gravel roads and bushes. :bang:

well if this helps. use industrial finish like they use on construction equipment. it comes in differant grades and you can buff it out to a fairly nice shine. 6000 is to much. should only cost about 2000 or less depends on if they are doing any body work or are you going to prep. you can also go to one of the cheaper shops like maaco or 4 day if its still around. they will do okay work for the price. like you said it will get scratched up
 
DuPont Imron polyurethane enamel. Tough as nails and enamels are way easier to touch-up/repair than base/clear systems.

I even used it on a '69 Mustang that I restored. With just a light polish/buff it's smooth as glass and tougher than heck.
 
PPG is great, It is one of the more expensive single stage paints that I priced out. I wound up going with teh Napa Single stage and all of their ingredients.

You will need around a gallon if you are spraying everything apart. my gallon of paint was $134 + 2 quart cans of hardener and 1 can of reducer.

This along with all of my miscelaneous things for some body work I need to do ran me 350 out the door.
 
painting the Nulla

the auto and body painting shop is giving the following paint options to paint Nulla: Limco, industrial, ppt, dupont, or any other kind that i choose. may question to the paint gurus is, What kind of paint should i use?

it will cost $1.500 he has a "shop" at the back of his house, no paint booth but there is an enclosure made out of canvasses. i looked at the other cars he has painted and i was impress for the price i am getting. the job will include taking the doors, hood, fender out and painting inside and outside of the Nulla. he also knows someone that will take the windshield and other glass out but that will be extra, the "cages" will also be send out for sand blasting and powder coated that will also be extra. what do you think?:cheers:
 
Imron....that's what I want as well to do my 80 next time.

That's what we used to paint dune buggies with. It's also what my friend that does high grade custom car restorations uses for frame, engine compartment, trunk, etc where he wants a super tough paint.

I want my entire 94 80 series re-done with this then sprayed on sound deadener inside as well.

I would spray your entire rig the same color if it were me. I think it would help it all look matched better than two colors. Of course, I like the traditional white LC roofs.
 
2elo and Bryan e are right--Imron is tough. I used it on an old '63 230SL Mercedes-couldn't hurt it!
 
Sweet rig! That's a really good deal for prep & paint.

I was going to use Imron. But found a local company that makes an industrial paint called Endura, so went that route. She goes for paint tomorrow.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the industrial paints (PPG Nason, Dupont, Endura). From what I read, Nason is the most expensive. 2x the cost of Imron. Maybe consider spending the extra on an epoxy primer.

Imron is even tougher on your lungs. You should ALWAYS wear a respirator with whatever paint you use, but I would recommend a Tyvek suit if sparying Imron. I've heard of people getting chemical pneumonia from overexposure of it through their skin.:eek:

PPG any day. It's probably the best manufacturer of automotive finishes in the US. Plenty of heavyweights in Europe, but get your checkbook out if you want to purchase one. I wouldn't see the need for using a European brand since the Cruiser came with a flatter finish from the factory. Pair that with the fact that it's intended purpose was to get hillbilly pinstriping while wheeling/working in the woods.

I have been doing autobody/restoration work for over 20 years now. It's currently on the "obsessive" hobby level now, but I can debate it with the best that proper prep/fillers and primers are the key to a long lasting paintjob. The top coats are all for show.

thanks, i am thinking of the ppg "del fleet" line polyurethane. $150. a gallon. the dupont imron elite is over twice the price per gallon. also imron can not mix the color code 8b2, ppg can:cheers:
